Meadow Park News

Principal's Corner
Hello Meadow Park Families,
Thanks to the many of you who are reading our newsletter on a weekly basis! It is important to our staff that you know what is happening in our school. I hope the articles and pictures in the newsletter each week give you an opportunity to talk with your student about what is going well or could be better while they are here at The Park each day.
We just finalized our Students of the Month for September (there is always a delay) and next week we will be looking to connect with those students, get their Meadow Park All-Star shirts to them, and congratulate them for exhibiting the trait of being Open-Minded Learners here during the opening of school. Pictures will follow in our next newsletter (perhaps sooner on social media)! In October, we are turning our attention to students who are Knowledgeable Learners. Students demonstrate this as they explore concepts, ideas, and issues that have local and global significance across multiple subject areas, building in-depth understanding as they do so. Our teacher teams will be working to identify students that embody this trait throughout the month.
As always, please don't hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns. Let's make it a great week next week!
Jared Freeman
Principal

All 8th Graders will take the PSAT 8/9 - November 14th
During the third week of November, all Beaverton 8th grade students will take the PSAT 8/9. Meadow Park’s testing day that week is November 14th and will include a modified scheduled.
The PSAT 8/9 is an assessment given to eighth-graders that is closely aligned to the SAT®, PSAT/NMSQT®, and PSAT™ 10. It consists of questions in Evidence-Based Reading, Writing and in Math. It helps establish a baseline for students as they enter high school and begin preparing for college and career opportunities.
Your child’s score reports will be available toward the end of January.
For more information on the PSAT 8/9, please go to: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-8-9/inside-the-test or view: PSAT_info_Eng_Span.

In recognition of Digital Citizenship Week, we are delivering lessons through Advisory classes this week and next. We are covering topics such as creating positive and safe digital footprints, being an upstander against cyberbullies and posting online with messages that are: True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, or Kind. We will continue to talk to our students about being safe and responsible digital citizens throughout the year as well.
Please take this opportunity to "Have the Talk" with your kids at home. Here are some resources from Common Sense Media that can help you discuss topics like Being Kind Online, Keep Private Things Private, Don't Believe Everything You See, Don't Overshare, and how to Stand Up For Others!

TAG - Talent and Gifted
Do you think your child might be TAG?
Every year all students are considered for identification as Talented and Gifted in Beaverton School District. These services are usually provided within the classroom by the teacher(s). In accordance with Oregon law, District policy defines gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.
In accordance with OAR 581-022-1310, our District is also committed to efforts in the identification of students from ethnic minorities, students with disabilities, and students who are culturally different or economically disadvantaged.
If you think your child might exhibit qualities that typically are used to describe giftedness, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form (linked below). Because we believe that parents are excellent observers of their child’s potential, we invite your input into this nomination process. This parent form is based on the Kingore Observation Inventory that is used by classroom teachers in the fall for a six-week period of time. Circle those characteristics that describe your child and provide supporting examples whenever possible. While completing this form does not guarantee that your child will be tested, it will give your school’s TAG committee valuable additional information in the nomination process.
Upon receipt, your completed form becomes part of the school’s identification process. Parents will be notified regarding testing eligibility, and the required permission form will be sent to parents prior to testing. Testing can begin as early as mid-November, and identification is usually completed within six weeks.
The Parent Information Form (linked below) may be completed and returned to your school’s TAG facilitator, or the school’s office.
