Interfaces
The 3 Interfaces used by Operating Systems
What is an Operating System?
An operating system is the most important part of a computer. It is a computer system that controls everything the computer does. It manages the memory, handles communications between software and hardware and organizes how data is stored on backing storage. Without an operating system a computer is useless.
Some examples of operating systems include:
-Windows
-Linux
-VMS
-iOS
Interfaces
There are 3 types of interfaces used by operating systems. These interfaces include:
-Command Line Interface (CLI)
-Menu based interfaces
-Graphical User Interface (GUI)
Command Line Interface
CLI is a text based interface where the user has to type in the commands they want to use.
Menu Based Interface
A Menu based Interface is a user friendly interface where instead of typing in your command you can choose one from a list. These are often still text based and can be much slower.
Graphical User Interface
GUI's are also easy to use as they have pictures or icons that your can click and the computer does the coding for you.
