Weekly Newsletter for LES & LIS @ USD 469
Welcome Back!
This promises to be a successful year as the staff has worked hard preparing to provide your child with a rigorous and relevant educational experience. It is also important for our school community to build positive relationships with your students and your family. We anticipate this will be a fun, exciting, and rewarding year for all.
Your Proud Principals,

"At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child's success is the positive involvement of parents" Jane D. Hull
1. Make sure your child attends school daily, that they are on time, and prepared for the day's activities.
First Bell: 8:20 am Tardy Bell: 8:30 am Dismissal: 3:30 pm
Please do not bring your child to school prior to 8:00 am-there is no supervision prior to 8:00 am.
2. Help your child do their very best to complete their homework and assignments recommended by their teachers. The foundations they practice in elementary school will benefit them their entire lives throughout middle and high school and beyond.
3. Set a daily reading goal to help your child become a fluent reader and develop strong literacy skills. A few minutes per day can have an enormous impact on your child's reading ability. Reading with your child also creates an opportunity to have a positive parent-child bonding.
4. Work with your child to practice our Character Virtues-PRIDE (Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Diligence, Excellence)
R-E-S-P-E-C-T
"Respect means you care enough about other people and their feelings before you act"
Some great opportunities for your child to practice RESPECT include but are not limited to:
1. Respecting others' personal space and property
2. Choosing kind and encouraging words
3. Respect rules that adults designate by following them
4. Be polite. If you make a mistake-apologize.
5. Be a problem solver if a conflict occurs. Maintain mutual respect and civility, even though you may disagree with a person or if they make you angry.
Check out the RESPECT Rap video made by elementary school kids. A fun way to discuss RESPECT with your child! Thank you for promoting this important character virtue in our school and our community!
The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round
Be Safe, Be Smart, Be Seen!
Help your student be a smart and safe bus rider:
1. Be at the bus stop 5 minutes before the scheduled pick up time. Drivers cannot wait for late students.
2. Students are expected to be safe, respectful, and kind to all while waiting for their bus.
3. Use of profanity is not permitted at the stops, on the bus, or at school.
4. Students must maintain a safe distance from the curb while the bus is approaching. The bus must come to a complete stop before students should approach the bus to load.
5. Students departing the bus must move away from the bus, quickly and safely. Avoid running.
6. If the student must cross the street, always cross 10 feet in front of the bus where the driver can safely monitor the student's location.
7. Fighting, harassment, bullying, or intimidation is strictly prohibited at all times. Be kind, be respectful.
8. No use of alcohol, tobacco or vaping products, or drugs or medications, or firearms at bus stops or on the bus.
9. Parents are responsible for transporting large items used for class projects or larger band instruments. There is limited space on the bus.
Please remember:
1. No parent or unauthorized person may approach the entry door of the bus at any time.
2. Please remind your student to respect the bus driver by following all bus expectations and directions from the driver.
3. Students will receive an assigned seat on the bus.
4. Students may not ride home on a different bus with a friend unless they have a written note from their parent with parent contact information.
Logistics of riding the bus:
1. If your child is a no-show for 3 days at their bus stop, the bus may no longer stop to pick them up. Please communicate with the transportation department if your child will not ride the bus for 3 or more days.
2. Talk softly and do not distract the driver unless there is a safety issue or concern.
3. Keep the bus clean and remove your trash. Food or drink is not allowed on the school bus.
4. Students must stay seated when the bus is in motion. Students must remain in their assigned seat.
5. Students must never extend their arms or their head out of the window.
6. Follow all driver directions-at all times.
7. Report any damage to the driver as you exit the bus.
Consequences for not meeting bus expectations:
If your student is issued a bus referral, Dr. Mindy Wells-assistant principal at LES or LIS-will visit with your student to problem solve the issue. Parents will always be contacted if a bus referral is issued. Bus referrals are typically issued for a significant rule or safety infractions or if a student is not responding respectfully to the driver for repeated minor infractions.
The potential consequence of not meeting bus conduct expectations may include short-term or long-term suspensions. Students may lose the privilege of riding the bus with repeated infractions.
Students that damage bus property will be expected to pay for those damages. Failure to pay for damages within two weeks may result in loss of riding privileges until damages are paid in full.
Please review the Lansing USD 469 transportation bus conduct expectations with your child. It is our hope that every child riding the bus has a safe and positive experience.
