STAND FOR SOMETHING OR FALL FOR ANYTHING

BY TROI BENBOW

On August 9, 2014 in Ferguson, Missouri, Michael Brown was shot to death by Officer Darren Wilson. The story has been in mainstream news ever since. There have been riots and rallies, specials on television, and protests all over the world in support of Michael Brown.

Supporters of Officer Wilson have donated almost one million dollars, including an interview in which he received five hundred thousand to complete. Social media has been a relief for many opinions on the situation as well. The death of 17 year old Michael was tragic, but the ignorance following his death and Officer Wilson’s non – indictment has been the most outrageous series of events my eyes have ever seen. Whatever your opinion on the matter, know the facts. Learn and fully understand what happened not only on that day, but the events leading up to that day.

As young adults, it’s time we start to become more aware of the world outside of Snellville. We must stand for something, because if not we will fall for anything. As the world’s future leaders, it’s time we take interest in current events – politics, money, social problems, to name a few. Also, remember the lasting effect something posted on social media has. We need to get to a point where we are able to form strong arguments and back them up with facts.

DECA's FALL FASHION SHOW CREATED AND DIRECTED BY FATOU CAMARA

On November 20, 2014, South Gwinnett High School held its first ever Fall Fashion show. With collections from talented and artistic individuals like: NGOUNOU by a Gynélla, a S.C.A.D student. SITL Couture by one of our own teachers, Ms. Dolores Sweet. Unrivaled Designs by Timmy, who is now one of the featured designers from Dream Apparels Glamsquad Fashion Show 2014. Amerique et Afrique by our talented Lovette. Last, but not least, The Black Rose by Shaughna-Kay. Also a generous sponsorship by Kohl's, The Gentry Shop and Plato's Closet. The two hour packed show, all student organized by Fatou Camara, our DECA Fashion VP, and Simone Lawson, our DECA Social Media VP, was filled with different scenes and acts, all of different styles. The models were truly unique, diverse, and showcased their pieces well. According to many students, "it was the best fashion show South has held yet". We hope to beat that record in the upcoming Spring Fashion Show in March. See you all there!

ONE TEAM, ONE FIGHT

Being a Raider is a privilege and an honor. In order for one to be a raider you must have good sportsmanship, strength, courage, motivation, and knowledge. Raider isn't just about being physically fit, but you have to be mentally fit as well. For the Raiders to be physically fit we train hard. Training hard consists of a 3 mile run to Briscoe Park and back. We rope bridge, which is when we set up a rope and 8 team members go across the rope while 2 other members hold the rope up. We do push ups and go 1-25 miles around the school with rock sacks, which is a 6 pound bag that is carried like a book bag. To finish our training for the day, we do tire flips, which is when we just flip tires. We try our best to be the best, as well as "One team, one fight".

To be mentally fit, we have motivation speeches, which include a chant from the team screaming, "One team, one fight, one team, one fight, one team, one fight aah!"

Our motivational speeches also keep the team spirit high and let us know that we can do it, regardless if we place or not, we are still, "one team, one fight". Overall, Raiders is a great motivational experience. Raiders will teach you how to push yourself, how to work with different people, and how to be a good team player.
