Hello Warrior Families!
Whew, it's been a week! From an admin standpoint, one of the highlights has been Mrs. Berry's AP Language and Composition students. Students have been studying metonymy, which is a figure of speech that involves substituting the name of something with an associated characteristic. For example, the crown may be substituted for the term king. Mrs. Berry's students were tasked with using metonymy to write sentences about the admin team. We got a good laugh out of these:
- Look out! The Bob is on the move!
- Hey Tie, can we get some lunch now?
- Salt-and-Pepper led today's pep rally.
- Walkie-Talkie patrols the lunch room.
- Cat Tattoo called my friend to the office.
- Mr. Thinks-He's-Funny dismissed our table at lunch.

Student and Staff Highlights
Recently, Spanish students have been learning more about Día de Muertos by watching videos, reading articles, making cempasúchil flowers or marigolds, and creating calavera posters. The Day of the Dead or Día de Muertos originated before the 16th century in the Aztec empire. Once the Spanish conquered the Aztec empire, the Catholic Church moved these celebrations and rituals honoring the dead throughout the year to the Catholic dates commemorating All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Indigenous traditions were combined with catholic practices and celebrated on November 1 and 2.
In these ceremonies, some people build ofrendas or altars, in their homes and others decorate in the cemetery. “Offerings” include candles, photos, tamales, chiles, water, marigolds and pan de muerto. Calaveras, which are clay molded sugar skulls are often painted and decorated with feathers, foil and icing. Papel picado, colorful tissue paper folk art with cut out designs, are hung to stream across the altar or the wall. Some families also include a Christian crucifix or an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
“People are really dead when you forget about them, and if you think about them, they are alive in your mind, they are alive in your heart. When people are creating an altar, they are thinking about that person who is gone and thinking about their own mortality, to be strong, to accept it with dignity,” says Mary J. Andrade, a journalist and author of eight books about the Day of the Dead.

Family Feedback
Families, we want to hear from you. We do our best to support our students and families, however we know at times there are things we might miss, related to academic needs, friendships and relationships, mental health, and safety. Your voice is important to us as we reflect on what we can do better to support our students and families. We know that we can best support kids when we work in partnership with families and the community.
