Spelling Bee Results!
Congratulations to all of our Spelling Bee participants! They spelled their hearts out for two hours last Tuesday night.
Tied for Third Place: Hawwa Shahid (8th grade) and Nidhi Sonwalkar (7th grade)
Both girls participated in a final spell off with Hawwa Shahid prevailing.
Tied for First Place: Nairit Sarkar (6th grade) and our three time champion Neha Thomas (8th grade)
All students were enthusiastic and exhibited unbelievable talent and nerves of steel! The top three spellers will move onto the District Spelling Bee which will be held in January 29.
Good Luck to Hawwa, Nairit, and Neha as they represent Rice Middle School at the district level!
Congratulations, Emily Ren!
Emily Ren is an 8th grader at Rice Middle School. Her colored pencil drawing entitled “Serenity” will be display at the state capital YAM exhibit in Austin!

Parents Night Reminders:
Next week Ms. Barshop will be hosting a Parent Information Night for all current 5th grade parents with a kiddo heading to Rice next school year. The meeting will be at 6:00pm on Tuesday, January 19th in the Rice Cafeteria.
Ms. Edwards will be hosting a Parent Information Night for all current 6th grade parents. This night with provide information about the 7th grade registration process and class choices for next year. The meeting will be at 6:00pm Wednesday, January 20th in the Rice Cafeteria.

3. 2016 SAGE Summer Expo!
SAGE of Plano ISD Council of PTA's is proud to announce that our annual Summer Expo, showcasing summer camps and resources for special needs and gifted families, will be held Saturday, February 6, 2016 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. We are hosting the event at Plano Senior High School in the Cafeteria. SAGE Summer Expo gathers the best summer and specialty, indoor and outdoor camps/seminars/services for Special Needs, Gifted, and General Education children and families.The Expo is one of the largest summer camp and resource fairs of its kind in the north Dallas area.

8. Yearbook News
Individual Pictures
Mrs. Graves will post the individual student pictures in the cafeteria windows facing the hallway in the rotunda starting today. Please have your student check to ensure their names, grade levels, and pictures are all correct. If there are any issues, there will be a form for your student to fill out. They will be located near the pictures and they will need to turn into Mrs. Graves by January 19th. Pictures will be taken down on January 20th.
Final Yearbook Sale
Our final yearbook sale is going on next week! Starting next Tuesday yearbooks will be sold online, and by Mrs. Graves. Order forms will be available in the front office and the counselor’s office. Pay attention for yearbook sales details to be posted by our yearbook staff!
9. 8th Graders: Do You Play Tennis?
Are you interested in being part of a team? Are you going to attend Jasper? When you sign up for your classes next year, sign up for Jasper Tennis. Tryouts will begin the 2nd day of school next year. Everyone is welcome to tryout from beginners to Super Champs. If you have any questions contact mark.moore@pisd.edu
10. Rice's Annual Poetry Book--Now Accepting Submissions!
The deadline for submitting poetry and art to The Rice Middle School Poetry Book is fast approaching! Students can see their English teacher for Directions for Submitting, or see Ms. Weidenbruch in room 518, Ms. Beekmann in room 808, or Ms. Dyer in room 804 for details. The Permission to Publish form must be signed by a parent for poem or art to be published. Students will receive their own copy of the Poetry Book at our annual Poetry Reading Bash in the spring. The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, January 26, 2016. Directions for submitting and Permission to Publish form attached.

Jasper Band Boosters: Princeton Review Practice Tests
Thinking about taking the SAT or ACT? Don't practice on the real thing! The Jasper Band Boosters and Princeton Review are sponsoring practice SAT, ACT, and PSAT tests at Jasper High School on Saturday, Feb. 6th. The tests are open to all students. Online registration is now open at https://jasperband.membershiptoolkit.com/form/m/14197
You don't have be a band member to take the test. Registration deadline is Saturday Jan. 31st.
