We missed our attendance goal!
Please remember that it is so important for our Tigers to be at school! When our Tigers are not at school, they're missing out on learning and we miss having them on campus!
Last week, our attendance hit the lowest percentage yet! With cold and flu season starting to pick up, please remind students to wash hands and cover their coughs! Let's get our percentage back in the green!
*Please remember: If your child is sick with vomiting, diarrhea or a fever, they must remain home until they are symptom free for 24 hours without the use of medication. After an absence, please remember to send in a written note or doctor's note within three (3) days of the absence for the absence to be considered excused.
Compulsory Attendance Requirements:
Texas law requires children between the ages of six (6) and nineteen (19) attend school. According to Texas Education Code 25.095, the District is required to notify a student’s parent if the student has been absent from school.
1. State law holds parents accountable for monitoring a student’s school attendance and for requiring a student to attend school;
2. The student is subject to truancy prevention measures under TEC 25.0915; and
3. A parent is subject to prosecution and a fine under TEC 25.093 if a student fails to attend school without a legitimate excuse.
4. When a student incurs unexcused absences for three or more days or parts of days within a four-week period.
5. A student, who attends fewer than 90% of the days a class is offered, may be referred to the Attendance Review Committee to determine whether there are extenuating circumstances for the excessive absences and how the student can regain credit.
The 90% rule is defined as missing no more than nine (9) days per semester - regardless if the absences are excused or unexcused.

principal's point of view!
Fall Greetings Tiger Families!
“The days are long but the years are short," and, “Oh it goes so fast! Enjoy every minute!"
What they say is actually true.
I know, as somehow, 18 years have flown by that I have been blessed to serve as an educator, and most importantly, the power change lives! Although my role serving as an educator changed a bit over the years from a First Grade teacher, to a Special Education teacher, to an ARD Facilitator, an Assistant Principal, and now being a first year Principal, I have never taken for granted the multitude of this power.
In fact, sometimes it even haunts me, as the power is so incredibly strong. Don’t you remember those teachers ? The ones that made you feel like you could accomplish anything! What about that one that made school a miserable place to be?
I’m confident as you read this and think back you can still feel it. I sure can, in fact, I am typing a little faster as I think about my college professor that said “ you will never make it as a teacher!” Thank goodness she was wrong, and I have the opportunity to positively impact lives!
The power became even stronger, when like you, I got to hear it from the perspective of my own child. It reminds me that he is listening to my every word and those words have the power to shape his perception that will become his reality (positively or negatively). Often, his perspective is a startling reminder to slow down and reflect.
I know it is important to take a moment to slow down and reflect, but the truth is I’m constantly in motion, whether I’m moving through a busy day or waiting for the next busy event to happen. This constant motion has me continuously reaching for ways to work smarter not harder, to find balance in the chaos, to have peace while still being able to do all the things I need to do (and want to do).
So I get a little anxious as I realize, we are beginning the second week of our second nine week grading period. The adrenaline rush that comes with a new school year is wearing off, students are getting irritated with their peers, the first unit assessment scores are in, first report cards are going home, parent teacher conferences are in full swing, Fall Book Fair, Red Ribbon Week, Math-o-ween, 5Oth Day of School, First Nine Week Awards, Music Performances, etc. etc.
When things start building up, the days are long but the years are short really starts to ring true, and if your like me, I start to wonder if I’m messing up somewhere. Then, I came across this article by Lori Desautels that I found engaging and helpful to remember to be present over perfect. As a parent like you, I feel this information is pertinent to our families as well.
Three things kids (and adults) want to hear:
1) I believe in you.
2) You have a purpose.
3) How are you?
1. Believe
"I believe in you. You are going to be successful someday. You're going to make it! If you apply what I see in you, there is nothing holding you back!"
To believe in another is to see what cannot be seen just yet. It requires focusing on all that is going well and right, even though there will be conflicts, bad moods, ornery behaviors, and consequences for poor choices. We notice it all -- new shoes, hairstyles, kind gestures (though they may be scattered and few) -- and we build upon even the most challenging of performances that, with a perspective shift, could turn on a dime to a strength. We are detectives, looking for the missing pieces that we know exist but have been temporarily buried. We create experiences, "forced successes," that give the student an opportunity to feel capable. By this time of year, we know our students well, yet we can fall into an emotional and academic rut. So we begin to give a few more acceptable choices that are aligned to our standards and topics. We can leave affirming notes and share our personal challenges that caused us to doubt ourselves at an earlier time in our own lives.
"I believe in you! Let's make a plan together for just tomorrow. Let's choose two accomplishments that you want to see through and design a way for them to happen."
2. Purpose
“You have a purpose. I see it and feel it! Let's have fun and discover what it is. A purpose might change, and that's a good thing, but it’s there!”
How do we help a student find his or her purpose? We begin with an affirmation: "You have a purpose!" We listen for interests and signs. We respect the off days and the off-hours, and we try again. We share stories of others who lost a bit of hope and purpose but tried again and again. J.K. Rowling, Bill Gates, Michael Jordan, and Walt Disney are just a few well-known individuals that defined purpose through their mistakes and failures. We talk about the gift of failing and how we can choose to respond and learn from those moments of illusory despair. We begin to create a purpose for those students at school and in our classrooms. We make a plan inviting the student to serve another. Maybe he tutors a younger student or helps to plan a surprise meal for the custodians and the cafeteria staff. Maybe she identifies another student who is struggling, becoming a secret inspirer for a week.
Maybe we connect the class to a retirement home and Skype with another generation who has lived through these tumultuous years of adolescence and would love the companionship and communication from middle school students. Field trips are fewer today, and this allows us to invite community members with their own purposes and gifts into our classrooms as guests, igniting and sharing the work they are doing with homeless populations, troubled youth, and other service organizations that thrive on volunteerism.
3. Question Me
Listen for this unspoken request from students:
Ask me how I am. Ask me what I need. Ask me about my thoughts and feelings. Ask me what my opinions are, even if my response is ridiculous because I don't want to stand out in front of my peers! Ask me in private -- always in private. Ask me to teach you anything about my world, my culture, music I love, my beliefs, and my story. I may not say a word, and it may take the entire school year for me to respond to your questions, but I hear you. I hear your interest and your compassionate concern for what I like, what I need, and what plans I would like to create.
When we serve another, our own emotional circuitry changes. As we proceed with transparency, self-awareness, and persistence, our perspectives broaden, raising positive emotion while enhancing our own feelings of purpose and well-being.
“Every child needs at least one adult who is irrationally crazy about him or her.” - Urie Bronfenbrenner.
I have challenged myself, and I extend the challenge to you to “live” these three points with your child at home and be irrationally crazy about your child! (See Urie Bronfenbrenner’s quote above).
At CVE we continue to reflect and to use strategies to ensure our mission “EVERY KID, EVERY DAY!” so that every student makes progress toward a successful school year. Please continue to check out the Tiger Times, CVE campus website, teacher websites, and dojo which are all great ways to stay connected with school.
I encourage you to become active at CVE, either through volunteer work or simply by asking your children about their day. Together we will achieve our CVE vision “We believe in engaging and empowering successful and lifelong learners!”
We treasure our time with both you and your students!
Enjoy the fall weather!

Fundraiser final rewards...
Mr. Carter Guptill also was able to fulfill his "Admin for the day" duties on Friday! He did a great job with helping from the beginning of the day, and was a super trooper lending a helping hand. He loved giving a tour to two of his classmates of his "new office". When they were leaving one little girl said I think we should go back to class, but the other one said, "The new principal said we could go this way, let's do it". When we asked Carter what he wanted to be when he grows up, he said "An Assistant Principal". #Winning
The Second Grade classes did an amazing job during their "Circus, Circus" musical. The stage was filled with ringmasters, clowns, elephants and lions! Our Tigers did a great job during their performance with singing and dancing! A huge shout out to our music teachers, Ms. Franz and Ms. Burnam who did an AWESOME job putting this show together! Also, a big "THANK YOU" to our PTC stage design team who helped bring our circus together and created our accessories!
We're building our character at CVE with our "Tiger Traits"...
This month, we continue PERSEVERANCE:

Perseverance will also be our October Tiger Trait of the month.
Throughout the remainder of the month, we will discuss and model perseverance. At our Paw Rallies, a spirit rally of sorts, we will celebrate students who have demonstrated and represented the characteristics of perseverance! We look forward to continuing to build character in our Tigers, one trait at a time!
