Principal's Message

I hope that everyone had a great first week. I am sure that there were a lot of exhausted kiddos and the weekend will bring some well deserved rest!

Please see below for some exciting enrichment opportunities offered to our BES families.

For those who have recently registered at BES, please see the information below.

My name is Allison Fortney and I am the very proud principal of Bonsall Elementary School. As I enter my fourth year as the principal at BES, I can not help but reflect on where we have been, how we have grown and I so look forward to what the future holds for the students, staff and community of BES. Our BES community has been through a lot together and I am grateful for the immense amount of support you have given to your kiddos and our staff as we navigated some pretty unusual circumstances.

Community is the genuine care and compassion shared between staff, students, and parents. Bonsall Elementary School is a place where staff and families come together to ensure that the children entrusted into our care grow to be productive, confident, compassionate, members of society. We look forward to an amazing year!

On behalf of the BES staff, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to our new families and a welcome back to those of you who are returning. I hope that your summer was filled with amazing memories!

Please know I am passionate and committed to ensuring that each student receives the best possible education from our amazing and talented group of educators here at BES. Your child’s social and emotional well being and safety is important to each staff member on our campus. Have a wonderful school year!

Warmly,

Allison Fortney

Meet our new Assistant Principal - Heather Chamberlain

Dear Bonsall Elementary Families,

I want to welcome you to the 2022-2023 school year. As your Assistant Principal, it is my sincere

pleasure to be able to be a part of a phenomenal staff and assist in all of the amazing things happening at Bonsall Elementary. I am truly honored to accept this new role.

Please know I am committed to partnering with you and our amazing team of professionals to provide our students with high-quality educational opportunities in a safe and secure learning environment through a shared commitment between home, school, and community. I know I am joining a strong school culture synonymous with excellence, dedication, and collaboration

For the past 17 years I have been a Special Educator, working across a multitude of grades and in many different facets, including: a special education teacher, a district program specialist, and an assistant principal at a county specialized school to support students with unique learning needs. Previous to being a special education teacher, I had the opportunity to teach 4 th grade at an international school in Taiwan. My academic background includes a Masters of Arts in Special Education from Cal State San Marcos and a Bachelors of Science in Psychology from the University of Utah. I live in Carlsbad and when I am not working, you will likely find me spending time with family and friends, preferably outdoors, exploring beautiful San Diego County and all it has to offer with hiking, swimming, and riding my bike.

My hope this year is when you come to our campus, you feel welcomed, successful, and safe; I will do everything in my power to ensure that is the case for all of us. I am very much looking forward to settling in as a member of the Bonsall school community and getting to know each of you. Please feel free to contact me or stop by my office if you have any needs, or if you would just like to say hello.

It’s going to be a great year!

Warmly,

Heather Chamberlain

Enrichment opportunities at BES

BUSD 6Crickets Enrichment Portal (TK-6)

BUSD Families,

We are off to a great start this week as our students returned to school for the 2022-23 school year! This upcoming Monday, August 22nd, families will be able to register their children in grades TK-6 for our after school enrichment opportunities which support academics as well as offer enrichment in STEAM, Language, Dance, Theater, Chess, Art, Debate, Animation, Coding, and Programming. These fall programs will start in September but don't delay as they will fill up quickly! BUSD will also offer a winter and a spring session of enrichment courses for students in grades TK-6 at Bonsall Elementary, Bonsall West Elementary, and Sullivan Middle School. We are looking to expand and develop these programs in the coming years & are excited for the possibilities ahead!

Families may register for both on site and online enrichment opportunities through our district portal: BUSD 6Crickets Enrichment Portal (TK-6). Families will need their student's ID number to register through the enrichment portal. Students who qualified for free and reduced priced lunch through the lunch application process, are foster youth, or are English Language learners, may qualify for a partial or complete fee reduction during registration and will be identified by their student ID number. Click on the portal link, select your school, and check out these great opportunities. Remember, Monday, August 22nd, registration will open so don't forget to sign up to secure your spot!

*FitKids will be running their sports programs separately at BES and BWES through their partnership with the Bonsall Education Fund (BEF) and will work directly with your elementary sites. Please keep an eye out for more information about these great programs coming from your school site soon!

IMPORTANT UPDATES

  • Gates will open at 7:55 a.m. this year. The time change supports the 15 minute adjustment to the start of the school day as well as promoting equity across the district. Please do not drop students off prior to 7:55 as there will not be any supervision.
  • If you purchased a "First Day Kit" for your child at the end of the school year last year, they will be in your child's classroom on the first day of school.
  • Starting on Thursday, there will be 5th grade "Student Ambassadors" available to walk your child on campus and get them where they need to go. Students Ambassadors will also be placed strategically around the campus to support students as they transition back to school.
  • For the 2022-2023 school year, California will continue to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students. Our cafeteria will begin serving breakfast at 7:55 a.m. Please see below for the August menu and a message from Child Nutrition Services.

Back to School Night

Thursday, Sep. 1st, 5pm

31555 Old River Road

Bonsall, CA

More information will be available in next week's BBN specifying times for BTSN.

New traffic plan for Bonsall Elementary School

Along with County of San Diego Traffic Division, County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation, Education Solutions Group, Alpha Studio Designs and Southwest Construction Services, the district worked throughout the last year to create a traffic flow that promotes safety as well as a more efficient way of getting in and out of the school parking lot. Please see the attached map. I highly encourage you to drive your respective route prior to the first day of school in order to be comfortable with the new flow. A few things to note:

*You may not park your car or get out of your car in the loading/unloading zone. This is not only a safety issue, but also causes the traffic to back up.

*You can exit the school on Old River Rd ONLY if you park or drop off your student at the Community Center. The only exit from the school parking lot is via Avenida de los Piños. While following the traffic pattern, there will be no "left" in order to access the exit through the Community Center onto Old River Rd.

*The bus lane is at the FRONT of the drop off line. No cars will be allowed to access the bus lane. Please be aware that this is extremely important as our buses are on times routes and it is imperative that the assigned bus zone is kept clear of cars at all times.

*It is not yet safe to walk up from the neighborhood via Avenida de los Piños. During the next phase of the project, a sidewalk and crosswalk will be installed to promote students walking from the neighborhood.

*What was previously the "kinder" drop off and pick up is now designated for employee parking.

*The lane closest to the curb is for loading/unloading only. Please make sure students exit on the RIGHT side of the car. The left lane is now a passing lane which makes is extremely dangerous for students to exit on the left side of the car.

Health and Safety Update

In regards to COVID-19, Bonsall Unified School District continues to prioritize school safety and in-person learning for all students.

  • In person learning will continue as we launch the 2022-2023 school year and Masks and COVID vaccines are NOT required in our District. Students who wear a mask will be supported and respected.

  • With this in mind, BUSD asks all students to practice frequent hand washing, covering one's mouth when sneezing, and take measures to foster a healthy immune system (i.e. proper nutrition, exercise, and rest).

  • In turn, BUSD will continue to place an emphasis on the proper sanitation of all District schools and facilities and employ various COVID-19 mitigation strategies.

  • If your student tests positive for COVID-19 please report the result to the school and know they must stay at home for a minimum of 5 days. During this time we encourage you to monitor your students for their well being and return them to school once they are symptom free and test negative.

  • BUSD is and will remain in compliance with all county and state mandates regarding COVID-19.
