Cambrian Schools Update

WEEK #20, January 22, 2021

Big picture

Dear Cambrian Families,

I hope you all had a good long weekend and observed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday as a day of service to our community. As he so eloquently said, “Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?” Special thanks to Bagby Barracuda Tyson (above) for helping us mark the week in the school year with an excellent drawing of Dr. King!

As a follow up, last Thursday, January 14th, the Governor released the COVID-19 and Reopening In-Person Instruction Framework & Public Health Guidance for K-12 Schools in California, 2020-2021 School Year.

At last night’s Board meeting, I provided an update to the Board as to the recent requirements and guidelines by the California Public Health Department. The framework is intended to consolidate and update prior state public health guidance and orders related to K-12 schools that provide in-person instruction and includes

1) criteria and processes for school reopenings under the Blueprint for a Safer Economy;

2) considerations intended to help the school community leaders plan for and prepare to resume in-person instruction;

3) responses to confirmed COVID-19 infections;

4) practices for providing physical distancing in classrooms; and

5) direction on the implementation of stable groups of students and staff.

The guidance is a public health directive that applies to all public and private schools operating in California, and schools must comply with the orders and guidance issued by the California Department of Public Health to limit the spread of COVID-19 and protect public health.

Cambrian School District will continue with the gradual phased-in approach to return once the County moves to the red tier. A new change in the guidance allows schools (TK-6) to reopen for in-person instruction once Santa Clara County is in the red tier for 5 days. I shared that when we enter the red tier, we would communicate with all our families the return day and starting with our youngest students (TK-2) will be phased in first to return to school campuses.

Our reopening plan will continue to maintain a degree of fluidity as revised guidance/directives are presented by the state and local health departments. Our commitment is to keep families and staff apprised to changes as we move forward to bring students back to in-person instruction when possible to do so.

I continue to be incredibly grateful for your support and cooperation as we continue to inch toward in-person instruction. I am committed to updating you as we move forward. Have a wonderful day! We are Cambrian!

Nurse Update: Santa Clara County’s Youth Wellness Groups

I am introducing Santa Clara County’s Virtual You Program and want to extend an invitation for your youth to participate in our FREE upcoming wellness groups.

Virtual You is a series of wellness groups for youth ages 12-25 being offered by the county. The goal of these groups is to provide support to youth during these unprecedented times by building community, practicing self-care, and creating space for connection and renewal. Groups are drop-in and welcome to all. Each group that a participant attends is also a raffle entry for a $15 gift card that will be announced at the end of the series. Below are descriptions of the Alum Rock Counseling Center groups we are offering:

  • MINDFUL MONDAYS: This is for anyone looking to wind down, re-center, and find self-care in community. Each group is only 30 minutes, so it’s a perfect way to create space for mindfulness for those with a busy schedule! Each week will focus on a different theme and consist of a guided meditation, activity, discussion, and breathwork. This group is for you whether you’re brand new to the practice or have been in a long-term relationship with mindfulness. Weekly themes include Grounding, Gratitude, Acceptance-Commitment, Self-Love, and more!

WHEN:

High School Group: Monday 4:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Starts: 1/25/21
Middle School Group: Monday 3:15 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. Starts: 1/25/21

  • COLOR & VIBE: In this group you will learn how to implement self care into your daily lives while also vibing to music and making art. Youth will learn to make their own color wheel, choose color sheets that they can color as they like, and follow along with some step by step "how to draw" videos and will be able to color their drawing after.

WHEN: Tuesday 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Starts: 1/19/21

AMONG US GAME NIGHT: Virtual You is hosting a game night! We will be playing AMONG US every Wednesday evening. The game is super simple and a lot of fun. Explore around a virtual spaceship completing easy maintenance tasks while trying to keep safe from the imposter!

WHEN: Wednesdays 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Starts: 1/20/21

Whether youth are in need of a space to vent, create, or just have fun, we hope Virtual You can help meet those needs. In these challenging times, the value of prioritizing mental health and self-care is of utmost importance and we encourage you to lean on the resources of the community.

Staying Connected through Technology

We want to do everything we can to help with your technology needs. Thanks for your partnership!

  • Kidappolis: School Edition is an app that provides interactive, caregiver-led early learning opportunities. With Kidappolis, caregivers walk children ages 2-10 through a series of mini skill assessments to identify the child’s primary areas of need. Cambrian has partnered with Litlab to provide free access to Kidappolis.
