Spacey Speech Tips from our Amazing Speech Therapists

Listen well and avoid interrupting…

Many of us are so used to expressing our views that we tend to disregard what other people are saying. If you want to become a better communicator, the first step must be to learn how to become an active listener. This entails (unsurprisingly) more listening and less talking.

Outer Space Occupational Therapy Tips

It's important for children to learn to write their letters with the correct formation to promote good writing habits. Letters are to be formed from top to bottom, NOT bottom to top. Later, your child will be able to write more quickly and legibly if they develop good formation skills. If your child struggles with top-down formation, give them a starting point (can be a dot, a sticker, or anything motivating) and make sure to model the correct sequence of strokes. Online there are great charts for correct letter formation of both uppercase and lowercase letters.

Out of this universe ESOL tips....

Here are some idioms using common Thanksgiving vocabulary. This is a fun activity where students must take their best guess at what the idioms mean.Take this activity a step further by asking them to use the idioms correctly in their own sentences. These sentences can be written or spoken.

  • To go cold turkey

  • To be stuffed

  • To stuff your face

  • To gobble up

  • The gravy train

  • As easy as pie

Moon Math Games from Mrs. Gaither & Mrs. Segarra

The Use of Money: If children earn an allowance, they naturally learn about the value of money and how to count it. Suggest implementing a savings plan or giving children a penny for progress made towards a goal. Children will learn through the process of how to count money, how to exchange smaller coins for larger value coins (such as 10 pennies make a dime). Having children help at the grocery store is also a way to boost learning about money.

Transportation Changes

Parents are encouraged to have a consistent mode of transportation for their child to eliminate confusion and the potential for a child going home the incorrect way. However, we realize that there are times when a transportation change needs to be made. We prefer all changes in writing via email.

In the event you need to change your child's transportation, please send an email to the child’s teacher and to our receptionist, Ms. Storms at stormsj@fortmillschools.org. All changes must be made by 1:30pm. Students will be sent home their usual way if no communication has been received from the parents.
