From the Desk of Principal Bradley:
Greetings,
March has proven to be a very busy month with lots of changing weather. April is right around the corner and spring is officially here! Soon, the warm weather will stay in the air, and the waking insects and budding flowers will know the season! We have PSSA testing this month! Our third, fourth, and fifth grade students will take PSSAs in the morning on the following dates:
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS - April 4-7
MATH - April 24-26
SCIENCE-4TH GRADE ONLY - May 2-3
Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will be testing each morning beginning immediately after morning announcements, so please make sure your child gets a good night’s rest, eats breakfast and arrives on time each day. Attendance is of the utmost importance during the testing period, and I strongly encourage the children to be present daily during the testing window. Fourth grade will take the Science PSSA on May 2nd and 3rd. Attendance is of the utmost importance during the testing period, and I strongly encourage the children to be present daily during the testing window. Fourth grade will take the Science PSSA on May 2nd and 3rd. While these tests are extremely important, please help us remind the students that they have been prepared and will do just fine on the PSSA. Good luck to all of our students as we begin. Once again, the entire building is affected by the PSSA testing as we will have a modified schedule in support of a quiet, comfortable testing environment. We appreciate the flexibility and “all hands on deck” approach that everyone, including the primary grades, have adopted to provide an optimal testing environment for our intermediate students.
You may recall that students recently enjoyed a Walnut Street Theater performance called The Boy That Cried Bully earlier in March. The Walnut Street Theater will be returning on Monday, April 10th for a performance called The Return of Nick Nutrition and His Dog Fiber and parents are invited to attend their child's performance. The students in grades K-2 will view the performance at 9:30 and students in grades K-PM and 3-5 will view it at 2:00. If you'd like to come see the show, please arrive early with your photo ID so that you can go through Raptor. We've scheduled two shows just to make room for families to enjoy the performance with us; we hope you'll join us!
Would you believe that we will soon begin to diligently work to determine student placements for the 2017-18 school year? Please be assured that I consider the placement process to be one of our most important tasks, so I would like to share our process with you. Student placement is determined and reviewed by our Placement Team, which is a team of professionals consisting of your child’s present teacher(s), receiving teachers, guidance counselor, reading specialists, special education teachers, Instructional Support teacher, a special area teacher and the principal. Each child’s academic, social and emotional growth, peer relations and needs are considered and discussed. We strive to create classes that are heterogeneous, function as cohesive groups, and provide each child with a teacher with the most suitable teaching style in an educational environment that will meet his or her needs. We feel our time is well spent because we also have a personal investment in each child. In view of the time and consideration taken in the placement of your child, I ask that you refrain from requesting a specific teacher placement for your child. However, I encourage you to share, in writing, any additional information about your child’s social, emotional, or learning needs that you feel would be beneficial to the Placement Team in this planning process. Please direct such correspondence to me directly at obradley@qcsd.org.
Finally, the spring season brings many opportunities for outdoor fun. We love fun at TV; but, as you know, we also believe in “safety first.” So, please help to keep our children and everyone safe by being extra vigilant, drive slowly and carefully, and stop at the stop signs in our parking lot. Also, please be reminded that in the event that you must drop-off your child in the morning, please follow the traffic flow to the side-entrance between 9:00-9:15. If you arrive earlier than 9:00, keep your child in your vehicle, park in the parking lot until you hear the 9:00 school tone, and walk them up to the entrance. Do not wait at the stop sign. The school doors do not open until 9:00 and there is no supervision until then. Thank you for helping to keep everyone safe!
As always, thank you for partnering with us and Working Together to Be Our Best! Let’s enjoy the beautiful spring days ahead!
Your partner in education,
Dr. Orathia Bradley

ATTENDANCE REMINDER
Parents are reminded that they have three (3) school days to return a signed, written excuse verifying a child’s absence. As per PA State law, excuse blanks cannot be accepted more than three days after a student returns to school. Emails to the school office are appreciated, but do not replace the written excuse. Parents are welcome to call the office (215-529-2509) to verify that the written excuse has been submitted by the student. We would like to partner with you in any way necessary to facilitate compliance with Compulsory School Attendance Laws, including meeting to develop a School Attendance Improvement Plan (SAIP).
- If a written excuse is not submitted within the three day return window, the excuse is permanently considered illegal or “unexcused” by the state.
- If a student accumulates three (3) unexcused absences, parents will receive a written “First Legal Notice” from the school district with a warning that future unexcused absences may result in a citation from District Court.
- Once a student compiles ten (10) total absences (including trip requests, half day absences, etc.), parents will be required to submit a doctor’s excuse for an absence to be considered excused. Parents will be notified in writing if this occurs.
- If your family is planning for your child(ren) to be away for several school days, there is an “Educational Trip Request” form that needs to be filled out and submitted to the school office. Parents can download a form from the T.V. website or call the office for a hard copy. All trip requests must be pre-approved by the building Principal and should be submitted at least 10 days in advance.
- More information and the QCSD Elementary Attendance letter can be found on the TV website. All information written above reflects Pennsylvania State Compulsory Attendance laws.
