Open House Parent Information Night!
Thank you for attending last night's Open House. What a great turnout! We value our partnership with parents and we want you to be informed in how to help your student achieve academically. We want Oyster Creek to reach new levels in student achievement and we can't do it without you. Please take a few minutes to give us some feedback regarding your experience last night. Your feedback will be used to strengthen our partnership in working together for the students of Oyster Creek's community. Enter feedback here: OCE Open House Survey

We will make sure our car rider line moves as quickly as possible to prevent parents from dropping their students off in the school parking lot. It is a safety hazard for children to walk without a parent around moving cars. Thank you for cooperating with our staff to keep all of our students and adults safe!
Attendance Counts!
Attendance counts every day! Last school year OCE had 97% student attendance for the 2015-2016 school year. Our district expectation for all elementary schools is 98%. Here is the weekly attendance for the past three weeks:
8/22 - 8/30: 98.96%
8/31 - 9/7: 98.15
8/22 - 9/14: 97.10
So how has attendance been this week?
September 12th - 122 (Religious Holiday)
September 13th - 20
September 14th - 16
September 15th - 8
September 16th - 14
We need your help in meeting and hopefully exceeding 98% attendance. For further information, please visit our district website at: http://www.fortbendisd.com/Page/17529
SEVERE WEATHER DISMISSAL
SEVERE WEATHER DISMISSAL
With the changes in our dismissal system, we're in a good position in the event there is severe weather. If there is severe weather we will have walker parents move closer to the building and the car rider pick up will be reduced to three letters at a time instead of six. This allows for car rider students to remain dry under the canopy.
Walker parents, if there is severe weather (thunder/lightening/rain), and you have indicated that your child will change to a car rider, please make sure your child knows their car tag number and you have the tag displayed in your car for us to call. If you need a tag, please come in and pick one up from the front desk.
Counselor's Corner
Big Idea
Our big idea for September is RESPONSIBILITY. Responsibility is proving that you can be trusted with what is expected of you. Les Brown once said, “If you take responsibility for yourself you will develop a hunger to accomplish your dreams.” Ask your kids: What are your dreams? What do you want to be when you grow up? Do you know how to achieve goals? Taking responsibility means you have figured out plan for yourself to meet your goals. It’s never too late (or too early) to think about making yourself goals and trying to reach them!
Identity Day
October 14th will be our 2nd Annual School-Wide Identity Fair! An identity fair is similar to a science fair with the exception that it is geared specifically to the interest of the individual. The purpose of this fair is two-fold. The fair will empower students to show other students something (one thing) they find really special about themselves. It will also give our entire school community the opportunity to learn about each other, and the chance of conflict goes down the more we know about other people.
When creating their displays, students should explore the following questions: What is one thing about me that I would like to share? What are some ways that I can share this with others? In what creative ways can I display this information? Although there will not be any specific criteria set in place in regards to what you share or how the information is presented, there is an expectation that all students and staff participate in this event.
The Identity Fair will allow the staff and students of Oyster Creek Elementary the opportunity to actively and positively engage in learning about some very special people – each other! Each grade level will set up a time during the day when classrooms can view each other’s boards. We believe that celebrating each other’s interests will ensure continued academic success in a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment. This will truly be a remarkable and memorable event, and we look forward to seeing the interest and creativity your child will share with others. Below are some examples to give you an idea of what this day will be about.
Gifted and Talented
Gifted and Talented testing referral are being accepted through September 30, 2016. To refer your child to be tested for the Gifted & Talented Program, complete one of the steps below.
Preferred Method: complete a parent referral form in Family Access - Family Access may be found at www.fortbendisd.com
Alternative Method: complete and return a referral form to the school counselor
The form is available for download at www.fortbendisd.com/gifted or may be obtained from the school office.
All referrals must be completed online through Family Access or returned to Mrs. Armiger by September 30, 2016. Students currently identified as Gifted and Talented do not need to be referred to maintain their current identification. Identified students should only be referred if they wish to be tested for identification in additional subject areas. If you have questions, contact the GT Office at 281-634-1129.
Home & School Connection
I’ve attached a new Home & School Connection (H&SC) for you. In this H&SC you will read about checking backpacks, helping with homework, communicating with the school, creating routines, and much more! I especially like the article titled, “Responsibility Rocks.” It has some great ideas about encouraging responsibility in kids. http://bit.ly/2ck5Zgv
