Principal Message
Dear Lane Families,
Welcome back! I hope you are ready for the start of another exciting year at Lane. It was great seeing everyone at forms and fees. Teachers have been busy in their classrooms and our maintenance crew is putting the finishing touches on the building. If you were unable to attend forms and fees, please stop in the office before school starts. Lane is 7:00 am - 3:00 pm daily, and Friday, Aug 24 the office will be closed from 10:00 am - noon for staff development.
Before and after school drop-off/pick-up routines will be similar to last year. Supervision begins at 7:25 am each morning. Breakfast is offered daily starting at 7:25 am and classes begin at 7:45 am. Students arriving at school should make their way to the open parking lot north of the cafeteria. Please, do not drive in this area before or after school for safety concerns.
7th and 8th grade students enter the building via the cafe doors and proceed to their first hour class. 6th grade students enter the door by the garden and proceed to their first hour class. Teachers will be on the playground to assist. Please, have your student bring a printed copy of their schedule.
Parents walking their children in the front doors after 7:45 am should drop them off by the main office doors. In order to ensure a smooth start to the school day, we are requesting that parents not walk their children to their classroom. If there is a need to share information with your child's teacher, please contact them ahead of time and schedule a meeting time. Thank you for assisting us with this.
Please plan on joining us for Open House on September 11 from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm. We will start the evening in the auxiliary gym at 6:30 pm. This evening provides parents, students, and teachers the chance to meet and discuss individual learning needs. This is also an opportunity to tour Lane.
Nurse Marla will be sending information home to families soon regarding our nut-safe classroom policy. This precaution is due to the level of severe allergies we have with some of our students. Please take the time to read through the information and guidelines we have established to ensure a safe environment for all students.
I'm looking forward to the new school year, and am excited to partner with all of you to continue providing an exemplary education for our community.
Liz

Liz Kayzar - Principal
Lane Community,
I am truly excited and honored to continue leading Lane Intermediate School. I am a person completely dedicated to the mission of building the capacity of others, and I desire to spend my life inspiring, encouraging, and developing the lives of stakeholders in our school community. Therefore, I believe in an overall mission to educate and inspire everyone to think, to learn, and to succeed.
It is my desire as a leader to help people meet their fullest potential by providing an environment that encourages professional growth, supports risk-taking, and invites collaboration. I believe that the key factor in establishing such an environment is implementing a shared vision of learning. Through a cohesive vision, implementations will be effective by sustaining a positive climate and supporting an interactive program conducive to 21st century learning and staff professional growth, while collaborating with team members.
My career has been built around a commitment to excellence and continuous professional development. During my educational journey, I accepted a Fulbright scholarship in the United Kingdom, I achieved Advanced Skills Teacher status, and I received an administrative degree / director of curriculum and instruction. In addition, I am certified in Educator Effectiveness and CESA 6 Educator Effectiveness. Also, I hold a Director of Special Education / Pupil Service license through Cardinal Stritch University. I have also encouraged excellence outside of the classroom by coaching athletics, instructing fitness classes, volunteering time, and becoming a three- time going on four-time Ironman triathlete.
As your Principal, it is important to me that everyone who steps through our doors-teachers, students and parents-are excited to be here! This attitude enables us to meet the challenges of academic excellence in a positive, fun, and nurturing environment. My door is always open and I welcome your input. Please feel free to call or email me to discuss any concerns you might have throughout the school year.
I look forward to working with you as a team to help each student at Lane Intermediate School meet their goals and have a successful school year!
Patrick Knaus - Assistant Principal
Dear Lane Intermediate Family,
I am extremely excited to be joining the Lane Intermediate Family this year as the new Assistant Principal. I am looking forward to partnering with all of you to provide the best educational experience for your children.
It feels great to be back in the West Allis - West Milwaukee area. I was stationed at General Mitchell Air Reserve Station during a part of my Air Force career, with the now moved 440th AW between 2002-2005 and was activated and deployed to support Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Following my enlistments, I lived right here in West Allis, over on 112th Street, when I began my educational journey at UW-Milwaukee. I have always had a fondness of West Allis and Milwaukee. I enjoy the community and all the great activities it has to offer.
I graduated from McKendree University with my Bachelors Degree (2010) and my Masters Degree (2014). Over the past seven years, I have taught middle school social studies beginning in St. Louis, MO and ending in Marinette, WI. I served in a number of district level capacities over that time, including district assessment coordinator and interim elementary principal. I am also a national trainer in classroom management practices that have a significant impact on student learning and behavior.
As an educator, I believe in developing relationships with students, staff, and families to build a learning community in which everyone feels they belong. Along with relationships comes teaching, modeling, and maintaining high academic and behavior expectations for all of our students. Through the use of PBIS and restorative practices we can support students in reaching those high expectations and experience success. I am committed to developing those relationships with everyone for the betterment of our students.
I look forward to the coming school year and getting to know the students, staff, and families of Lane Intermediate School!
Sincerely,
Patrick Knaus
Kari Skonecki - Academic Dean
My name is Kari Skonecki (formerly Kari Siejkowski – I was married in September 2015) and I was born and raised in West Allis. I attended Hoover Elementary for Kindergarten and 1st grade, General Mitchell Elementary for 2nd – 6th grade, Frank Lloyd Wright Middle School for 7th and 8th grade, and then I graduated from Nathan Hale High School in 2000. I then went on to Wisconsin Lutheran College from 2000 – 2005 where I played soccer and basketball while getting my degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Early Childhood Education.
I started working for the West Allis-West Milwaukee School district in 2007. I spent nine years at Lincoln Elementary/Lincoln Intermediate School. I started off as a long-term substitute in a 4th/5th grade classroom and then I transitioned into the building substitute where I was able to work in many different classrooms with many different age groups. The next year I was a fulltime 4th/5th grade classroom teacher at Lincoln Elementary, but it was the last year they were having 4th grade there because they were transitioning the school into an intermediate school. I went back to school to extend my teaching license to include middle school. The next four years I was lucky enough to teach 7th grade math and science and I was able to coach 7th and 8th grade boys and girls basketball. It was the best job ever. In 2013, I was then asked to become an Academic Dean (instructional coach working with teachers to continually improve instruction in the classroom) for the district. I fulfilled that role for three years at Lincoln intermediate and the past two years at Lane intermediate.
I am looking forward to the start of a new school year at Lane and working with a great team of teachers, wonderful students, and our new administration team (Liz and Patrick). Patriot Pride!
