Field Trip - Blue Springs School of Economics
Our 5th-grade field trip is quickly approaching. We are scheduled to visit the Blue Springs School of Economics to take part in the International Bazaar where students become immigrants of another country and take on the role of working in the business on Friday, November 1st.
Math
In math, we are just finishing up topic 2 - Adding and Subtracting Decimals. We had our topic 2 test today, (10/11). We will begin topic 3 on Tuesday, October 15th.
In Topic 3 we will be learning about:
- multiplying multi-digit numbers
- estimating products
- multiplying whole numbers with zeros
- solving word problems using multiplication
ELA
In reading, we are jumping into our next units of Theme and Figurative Language. We will be combining these units to help us with our third person narrative writing pieces.
Students come to 5th grade with a general understanding of theme from previous years. We will be building on this understanding and working to push their thinking to a higher level.
For writing, we are beginning our next writing unit of third-person narratives. We will work on incorporating dialogue into our stories and developing our characters in a way that makes them interesting. Students are really excited to begin this unit and already have some neat ideas!
Please ensure your child is reading for 30 minutes at home EVERY night. This is their only ELA homework, and it is important in order for them to be successful at school. If you need help finding books for your child to read, please visit arbookfind.com for suggestions that are at their reading level.
Science and Social Studies
Science:
We recently finished our discussion about the properties of matter as we explored different scientific tools used to measure temperature, mass, weight, length, width, height, and volume of matter. As we worked with graduated cylinders we realized that when liquid is displaced by a solid, we can use the displaced liquid to help us determine how much space the solid is taking up within the cylinder. We have also begun to explore atoms, molecules, elements, and compounds. We have learned that an atom is the smallest unit of matter and that the theory that all matter is made up of these small particles is called the atomic theory. We will continue to recognize how atoms work as building blocks for matter as we build models of compounds and molecules to help model this concept. Our next unit of study will be Changes in States of Matter.
Social Studies:
We have been learning about the geography, landforms, climate, culture, landmarks and attractions, natural resources, and products of the Southwest, West, and Midwest regions. We will continue to explore the regions of the United States as we move into our studies of the Southeast and Northeast regions of our country. We will continue testing over states and capitals in each region at least once a week over the next few weeks. The students will have a study guide to help them study and prepare for the quizzes. I also shared some websites with students in class that they can use at home to help them study their states and capitals for this unit. I am including the links to these sites below. I am also including the quiz dates for the last 3 regions quizzes below as well.
Important Dates:
Tuesday, October 15 - Midwest States and Capitals Quiz
Wednesday, October 23 - Southeast States and Capitals Quiz
Tuesday, October 29 - Northeast States and Capitals Quiz
YouTube “Tour the States Official Music Video”

During this unit, students will also have the opportunity to participate in our Geography Masters challenge with their states and capitals quizzes. Students who score 90% accuracy or higher on each quiz for each region including the Oceans and Continents quiz are eligible for the Geography Masters Celebration. Students will have 2 attempts at each quiz (original quiz and a retake if needed).
We are also beginning to prepare for our 5th grade Field Trip to Blue Springs School of Economics on Friday, November 1 and will begin our discussion about economic ideas and concepts within the next few weeks.
