National School of Character
Character education is an educational movement that supports the social, emotional and ethical development of students. It is the proactive effort by schools, districts, communities and states to help students develop important core ethical (recognizing what’s right) and performance (doing what’s right) values such as caring, honesty, diligence, fairness, fortitude, responsibility, grit, creativity, critical thinking, and respect for self and others. Character education provides long-term solutions to moral, ethical, and academic issues that are of growing concern in our society and our schools. Through character education, students learn how to be their best selves and how to do their best work while making school a place where students and educators feel comfortable and able to work.
Rally Sports has designed a Baxter National School of Character shirt and the store will remain open through October 20th. If you would like to order a shirt, please visit https://rallysportswear.com/customers/customers/baxterschoolofcharacter/

We have a special school wide presentation from the NED Show on Monday October 23rd. The NED show is a character education program that centers around three important messages: Never give up Encourage others and Do your best. The presentation will include storytelling, magic, humor, and yo-yo tricks. Following the presentation we will begin a week long sale of NED yo-yo products. I will provide you with the handouts to give our students.
During Red Ribbon week I would like for our students to design their own Drug-free t-shirt. I will be providing a template for them to draw on. I am leaving this up to you as to when you will allow students to work on this. I will have prizes for the top picks from each grade. If you have time during the day that is great, but if this needs to be a project you send home that is fine too. It is not mandatory for everyone to participate, but this is a great tool to start the conversation about being drug-free.

This week in the library...
We had our first Maker Monday this week. Students got to come down with their class to use the maker space activities such as building with cardboard, legos, marble run, building with cups and so much more! The fourth graders also came to the library to create Blackout Poetry. Students used pages from recycled books and created free verse poetry by blacking out the words that they did not use.
