LEVELING UP IN 2020
Howdy Hounds!
It was a great night for a FIESTA! Thank you so much to our fabulous FOH for putting together a Virtual Gala to keep the tradition alive! We so appreciate everyone that joined in on the fun. We had amazing items available for bid, and we are so thankful to the sponsors. The support of our community is what makes Huggins the amazing place it is! On behalf of the students and staff, thank you for supporting our school!
STAAR testing continues this week. Our third, fourth, and fifth graders will be completing the Reading STAAR test (see schedule below) and our fifth grades will also completing their Science STAAR. If you have a student that is testing, please be sure that you child has a good night's rest, a hearty breakfast, and gets to school by 7:30am.
It's hard to believe there are only two weeks of school left! Please be sure you have reviewed the list of important dates below. Please note that due to LCISD Covid-19 Guidelines, we are unable to have visitors on campus for our end-of-year events. However, we are looking forward to still taking time to celebrate a VERY successful school year. Kinder and Fifth Grade Graduations will be recorded and posted on class Canvas pages. Celebrations of Learning in First, Second, Third, and Fourth Grade will take place in the classroom. Teachers are working hard to plan classroom celebrations that acknowledge the hard work of our students this year.
Here's to a great week!
Sincerely,
Bethany Cunningham
Principal

Due to challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, your child has not received a spinal screening. Spinal screening can detect abnormal spinal curvatures at an early stage. Early detection is important for controlling spinal deformities.
The Department of State Health Services encourages parents to take their children to a medical provider for well child exams. During these appointments you can ask for your child to receive a spinal screening. If your child is screened, we encourage you to send us the results of the screen for our records.
Signs your child may have an abnormal spinal curvature:
- Uneven shoulders or hips
- Ribs that are prominent or stick out in one area
- Muscles that are prominent in the lower back or bulge on one side
If you think your child has an abnormal spinal curvature, please contact the school nurse for further guidance and to discuss your concerns with them.
Additionally, due to challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, your child has not received a vision or hearing screening. Vision and hearing problems can affect a child’s wellbeing and their ability to learn.
The Department of State Health Services encourages parents to take their children to a medical provider for well child exams. During these appointments you can ask for screenings. If your child is screened, we encourage you to send us the results of those screens for our records.
Signs of a possible vision problem include:
· Squinting
· Tilting the head
· Sitting too close to the television
· Constant eye rubbing
· Abnormal alignment or movement of the eyes
Signs of a possible hearing problem include:
· Your child wants volumes louder than other members of the family.
· Your child often says “What?”
· It seems like your child isn’t listening.
· Your child seems to hear fine sometimes and other times not at all.
If you think your child has a vision or hearing problem, please contact the school nurse for further guidance and to discuss your concerns with them right away.

21-22 Registration Procedures for New Students!
STAAR Testing for 3rd-5th Graders (Repeat)
This school year, our students will be taking the STAAR test online with the exception of the 4th grade Writing STAAR. Our students are familiar with the online testing platform, as they completed two interim assessments this year online already. There are multiple accessibility features that the students are able to access during the online assessment as well. Taking STAAR online will allow us an extended testing window, which means our students will not have to test back-to-back, multiple days in a row.
Although the state has waived A-F accountability ratings for the 20-21 school year, the data we receive is an important component in our quest for continuous improvement and student growth. A student's STAAR results can help us determine how well prepared your child is for the next grade level and can provide details on what specific skills we need to work on. This helps us provide differentiated, focused learning opportunities for all of our Hounds.
Please mark your calendar for the following testing dates for our Hounds. Please note, if you have a virtual student, we will be reaching out to you to review your child's testing schedule. All tests will be administered on-campus.
Fourth Grade Writing STAAR (paper-based assessment): Tuesday, April 6th (on-campus and virtual students)
Third Grade Math STAAR: Thursday, May 13th
Third Grade Reading STAAR: Wednesday, May 19th
Fourth Grade Math STAAR: Wednesday, May 12th
Fourth Grade Reading STAAR: Tuesday, May 18th
Fifth Grade Math STAAR: Tuesday, May 11th
Fifth Grade Reading STAAR: Monday, May 17th
Fifth Grade Science STAAR: Thursday, May 20th
Third-Fifth Virtual Students Math STAAR Test: Friday, May 14th
Third-Fifth Virtual Students Reading STAAR Test: Friday, May 21st
Fifth Grade Virtual Students Science STAAR Test: Thursday, May 20th
It is very important that your student arrive to school on time on his or her testing day. They should be well-rested and have a good breakfast. Students will be allowed to bring a snack, but we will also provide a snack as needed because we will be on an alternative lunch schedule. A sports top water bottle will be allowed.

With new students enrolling, please see the map below to review our car line procedures. Please be sure that you are utilizing Charger Way and not u-turning at the Irene Stern Community Center. If you are not turning onto Charger Way from 1093, please be sure to u-turn at the end of the line to avoid cutting. Thank you for helping us ensure a safe and effective car rider line.
Please note that our doors open at 7:00am. To help the flow of our car rider line, please ensure that your child is ready to exit the car by having their mask on when you pull up. A reminder that our school day ends at 2:55pm this year. We are now dismissing at our standard time. We appreciate your patience as we continue to maximize the effectiveness of our car rider line. With the changes in protocols due to Covid-19, it is taking some additional time to load cars, as students are being dismissed from their individual classrooms.
Updated Quarantine Guidelines - LCISD
Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) amended their COVID-19 quarantine guidance to allow two shorter options for the quarantine period.
Beginning Jan. 4, 2021, the District’s COVID-19 quarantine guidelines will be updated based on this guidance from the CDC, as well as guidance from TEA and UIL. This update does not impact individuals with a lab-confirmed COVID-19 positive test.
Individuals identified as being exposed to someone with a lab-confirmed COVID-19 positive test will be quarantined based on the following:
- 10 days after the last close contact, so long as they continue to monitor themselves daily for symptoms and take appropriate precautions through day 14
- 7 days after the last close contact, after receiving a negative test result (administered at least 5 days after the last close contact), so long as they continue to monitor themselves daily for symptoms and take appropriate precautions through day 14
Individuals who return to school or work from these shorter quarantine windows should regularly monitor themselves to ensure they remain symptom-free and take appropriate precautions for the duration of the 14-day incubation period. Individuals who develop symptoms at any time during the 14-day incubation period should not report to school or work.

As you know, we are seeing an uptick of positive Covid-19 cases in our area. In an effort to reduce exposure and limit the number of students and families that are required to quarantine, we are asking parents to partner with us to support our community. District protocols currently require all 4th and 5th graders to wear a mask at school. Our kinder-third graders wear a mask in the hallways, common areas, and during arrival and dismissal. We also have students wear a mask when they are in close contact with others or when social distancing is not feasibly possible, such as during small group instruction. When we have a positive case on campus, we are required to do extensive contact tracing to determine students/staff members that meet the definition of close contact. If the individual meets the definition, he or she is required to quarantine from school. To help reduce the number of of individuals required to quarantine, we are asking all students to wear masks. While we understand current district protocols do not require this in K-3, we are asking for a partnership in this process. We understand that there are many strong feelings regarding this topic, and we honor the decisions you have made for your child. We will remain in line with district protocols. We encourage you to talk to your student about wearing a mask at school to limit exposure and direct contact during this time.
Protective measures, including the use of face coverings, will be determined by the level of disease activity of COVID-19. The District will rely on data from the Department of State Health Services (DSHS), Fort Bend County Health & Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to determine the disease activity level and the appropriate protective measures.
Students are required to bring two dress code approved masks/face coverings daily. One will be worn, and one additional mask/face covering will be brought in a sealed/ziploc bag. Labeling of the masks with a student name is suggested.
Mask questions we have received:
Can my child wear a face shield? Full-face shields may be used in place of a mask to protect eyes, nose, and mouth whenever a mask is not feasible or whenever the education context may benefit from the ability to see an individual’s full face.
Can my child wear a neck gaiter/buff? Yes, these are also approved.
Does the mask have to be a Huggins uniform color? No. Masks may be any color or design. However, no inappropriate language or images will be allowed.
***Please note that BSN Sports has graciously donated Huggins Hounds lanyards that will be given to students on the first day of school. Students will be able to use these lanyard to attach their masks so that they do not get lost.
