Sunset Newsletter
September 2019
From the desk of Dr. McDaniel
What a great start to the 2019-2020 school year! I appreciate all who plan to come out for Back to School Night on Thursday to hear about the wonderful things that are happening at Sunset! If you were not able to attend, please make plans to attend Parent Conferences in October!
For those of you who are new to Sunset, WELCOME! We are so happy to have you. Just so you know, your child is being taught by the best teachers around! I am very proud of the staff of positive, professional educators who make learning relevant and fun!
September is going to be a great month and I look forward to continuing the positive momentum we have right now. Please continue to ask your child what we are learning or practicing at school. They should be able to tell you about a lot of GREAT learning happening at school.
We are continuing to implement Safe and Civil Schools this year at Sunset. Several of our teachers and our administrators attended a Safe and Civil School conference in Portland, OR over the Summer. We are very excited to put the new procedures in place during this new year. We have already seen big changes in our school community from our Safe and Civil Schools training!
Ms. Radford and I are always available to answer any questions you may have! Please feel free to email or call whenever needed!

STEM
The year is off to a great start in the STEM Lab! So far our students have had the opportunity to work on coding as well as a few other computer science skills. Soon we will begin working with our BrickLabs, OSMOs and Puzzlets. Be sure to ask your child in the next few weeks what they worked on when they visited the STEM Lab for specials. I look forward to sharing all of the amazing things we have in our STEM Lab with our students.

Computer Science
My name is Mrs. Pekrul and I have the privilege of teaching and facilitating Computer Science at Sunset this year! In my class, your children will be learning about computer programming and coding. Each student will have an account managed by Edmond Public Schools and will be using a curriculum specifically designed for their grade level. I love teaching Computer Science because it develops a passion for critical thinking and problem solving in our students!
I will also be teaching Digital Citizenship using a curriculum from Common Sense Media. This organization provides resources to parents and teachers about digital safety and age-appropriate media usage.
Looking forward to a wonderful year,
Mrs. Pekrul
Physical Education and Health
We hope you had a great summer! Mrs. Thompson and I are so excited to begin this year off great in PE and Health.
We have a great year planned, with numerous activities that will advance not only your child's health and wellness, but also aid in their understanding of academic content. In both Health and PE, we incorporate a word wall that helps to increase students academic knowledge, and also engage in activities that help to improve your child's reading, writing, and mathematics skills. There is no better way to learn than by having fun!
We are looking forward to a wonderful year of health, fitness, fun, and learning!

Music
My name is Ms. Wheeler and I am the new music teacher this year. We have started off the year making beautiful music with our singing voices and instruments already and I look forward to the music to come! Grade levels are beginning to build songs into their repertoire and will be adding in some music basics as we go through September. 5th grade families will get to experience a great performance by our 5th grade students at the Parent Academy! I can't wait for you to hear them September 26th at 6:00!
See you soon!

Counselor Corner
Fulfilled, happy, confident, responsible, kind, and loving. I have learned that these are goals families want for their children, and as an educator, what I want for my students.
I recognize that as a family member, you are my students’ first teacher and I want to partner with you to help our children become tolerant, compassionate, and caring adults. To support achieving these goals and help our students build their social-emotional skills, I am pleased to share that I am implementing Sanford Harmony in our school community.
Social emotional learning (SEL) helps children by promoting their health and emotional well-being and contributing to the prevention of violence, truancy, bullying, and substance abuse. In addition, SEL is associated with significant gains on academic achievement tests.
Sanford Harmony is a social-emotional teaching program that cultivates supportive and respectful relationships and is designed to build healthy relationships among students by having them engage in activities that promote understanding and respect. Over the course of five units, students will participate in engaging activities designed to enhance their abilities to learn, work, and spend time together - they include:
Diversity and Inclusion • Critical Thinking • Communication • Problem Solving
•Peer Relationships
I welcome your feedback on Harmony and encourage you to reach out if you would like additional information. To learn more about Sanford Harmony please visit www.sanfordharmony.org.
Thank you for your support!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bointy
