Northwood Elementary School will provide higher-level learning opportunities for all students to maximize their potential in a safe, nurturing, respectful, and diverse environment.

THE GREAT KINDNESS CHALLENGE: 1/25-1/29 - Thank you

I saw many genuine acts of kindness this week. Thank you to all that supported this with students.

Teamwork

Thanks to everyone for pitching in over the past couple of weeks. You have been an excellent example of kindness to your Northwood team.

Gleaners Food Drive - Thank you from Gleaners

Thank you so much for your donation of 357 pounds of assorted food to Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan. This generous gift will provide approximately 296 meals to your hungry neighbors in need! Outstanding job!

Without advocates like you in our community Gleaners would not be able to collect over 2.5 million pounds of food from food drives and distribute them to our more than 550 partners each year. Through your support, you are helping to connect hungry people with the food they need when and where they need it.

Attention 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Teachers - MStep Review

M-STEP Sample Item Sets The Office of Standards and Assessment (OSA) has created online Sample Item Sets for the Spring 2016. M-STEP for students in grades 3–8. Sample Item Sets are a select group of test items in English language arts (ELA), mathematics, science, and social studies that encompass different item types, such as multiple choice, constructed response, and various kinds of technology-enhanced items. The sets provide students practice in solving grade-level and content-specific test items aligned to Michigan’s content standards. Since the item sets are embedded in the online test engine used to deliver state assessments, students will develop familiarity with taking tests online while they practice using the test engine’s online tools and navigation buttons. The Sample Item Sets are contained within the Online Tools Training (OTT) component.

Valentine's Day Party Info/Reminders

We will celebrate on Friday, 2.12.16

Parties should not last more than one hour. These should be low key celebrations (EX: snacks, craft, opening cards). Teachers will determine the time, sometimes it is shorter. Party activities should not include anything that will damage the carpet or furniture(dyes, making goo, etc). Teacher will coordinate with room parents and need to be aware of the plans. Food must be nut and tree nut free. Make sure you work with any other known additional allergies in the class. Parents should be reminded that the cards should not include any candy that contains nuts or tree nuts. The classroom teacher is responsible for reviewing what the parents are setting up and for checking all food items. Last year M & Ms had to be removed from several cards. It is not okay to say students can just take it all home and parents can check it out. Thank you for your assistance.

Teachers determine the number up to the number listed below: Some may need less.

Volunteers
K-1 five
2-3 four
4-5 three

This number INCLUDES the room parent and any parents that need to be at a party (special diet, etc). Please make that clear to party organizers and give them names of any person that needs to attend if there are special circumstances. The party is for the students. The adults that volunteer are in the class to assist with the party. Lindsay will need to have the list of all room volunteers for the party by Monday February 8th. Please include the time of your celebration. They must check in with her and get a sticker.

**Lower el has a higher number to assist with the younger children. Please remember that this was a decision that was reached a few years ago with staff.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

PBIS Matrix/February Lesson Focus

Please focus on "Cafeteria" during the month of February. Please REVIEW and PRACTICE all four areas in the OAKS Matrix related to Cafeteria behavior. Be prepared to discuss with your colleagues and share lessons.
