Just Enjoy the Baby Koalas
Dear Cougar Family,
Last week, we celebrated our second Homecoming during which we had former students return to campus. Getting to see our alumni certainly adds a special layer to what is already a fun week of activities. Through each conversation and hug shared with our Cougar alum, it affirmed for me what I already knew: we are making connections and contributing toward building adults who are excellent community members. The Cougar Nation is mighty and strong and full of young men and women who exhibit the Cougar Qualities in all they do. There are a thousand moments from last week that are burned in my mind. Among them are the roar of the students and standing ovation as our Queen was named, the smiles of our two Kings as they rode on the back of the black mustang with the Queen, and the gym packed with happy kids dancing the night away in their finery. Thank you to all of our wonderful faculty members who had a hand in creating a wonderful week for our students!
Now, as we enter the 4th week of school, the shiny "newness" of the school year is starting to fade away. Couple this with progress report grades coming out this week and students tired from the weekend's festivities, there is potential for some of our current students to have trouble processing situations that cause them stress. As these situations emerge in the coming weeks, from a freshman who is upset at having a B on his progress report to a pair of seniors who start arguing on social media, remember that it is our job to de-escalate situations and help students learn the life skills needed to disagree , be upset, or to be disappointed in a manner that is both respectful and productive. Sometimes, that involves a reminder to just enjoy the baby koalas. See the Kid President video below to find out wha that means. (While his impetus for the video is politics, the implications are, of course, much broader.)
Thank you for the time and effort you are putting in to make this an incredible place for our students to learn! And as always, COUGAR PRIDE!

Walk & Talk & #ObserveMe Reminders
If you are willing to have an administrator and teacher visit your room during a Walk & Talk, we'd like for you to customize this sign and post it on your door. In addition, the Twitter hashtag #ObserveMe is an initiative in which educators invite others in to observe their classes and provide them feedback regarding a specific professional goal. If you would like the administrators and teachers who visit your room to provide specific feedback, please include these "Look fors" on your sign. Search Twitter for #ObserveMe to see things teachers from around the nation are doing to grow through peer coaching. Listing these "look fors" on your door sign is optional, but this feedback would be a key tool in ensuring you are progressing toward meeting your personal goal(s).

Cougar Pride Yearbook
Staff can buy a copy of the 2016-2017 Cougar Pride yearbook now for the lowest price of the year at www.smart-pay.com. The current price ($75) will increase to $80 on Sept. 17, and then to $85 on Oct. 15. After online sales end in the spring, we must charge the full price plus tax (around $97).
We appreciate the support of our staff and all of the positive feedback we received on last year's book. We're already hard at work on this year's book, whose theme, Vivid, incorporates both our school's 5th anniversary (roman numeral V) and the awesomely vibrant and passionate student body we're lucky to serve.
