The Spider and the Ghost of the Fly

By Vachel Lindsay

Poem

Once I loved a spider

When I was born a fly,

A velvet-footed spider

With a gown of rainbow-dye.

She ate my wings and gloated.

She bound me with a hair.

She drove me to her parlor

Above her winding stair.

To educate young spiders

She took me all apart.

My ghost came back to haunt her.

I saw her eat my heart.

MAIN IDEA

A Tragic Romance

This poem describes the feeling of desire and longing. It also symbolizes the tragedy of love and how it can be both inevitable and threatening. I like how the writer compares the predator and the prey, two totally different elements to create I tragic and moving poem. I love the thought that love can bring together two natural born enemies and then destroy any possibility of them being together again. its beautiful.

Why I Chose This Poem

A Connection

Even though the poem doesn't give much of a background, I like to entertain the thought that the spider and the fly had once been in love and that the tragedy would come later. Or maybe the fly had always loved the spider and the all the spider could see was its next meal. Whatever the case may be, I still love the incredible likeness to a human relationship. I love how the author was able to make a connection between a spider and fly and creating something so heart felt out of it. It may be a short poem and doesn't use a whole lot of dynamics, I still like the thought and connection behind it.

Jar of hearts

By: Christina Perri

I know I can't take one more step towards you
'Cause all that's waiting is regret
Don't you know I'm not your ghost anymore
You lost the love I loved the most

I learned to live half alive
And now you want me one more time

And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Who do you think you are?

I hear you're asking all around
If I am anywhere to be found
But I have grown too strong
To ever fall back in your arms

And I've learned to live half alive
And now you want me one more time

And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Who do you think you are?

And it took so long just to feel alright
Remember how to put back the light in my eyes
I wish I had missed the first time that we kissed
'Cause you broke all your promises
And now you're back
You don't get to get me back

And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Don't come back at all

And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
Tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
Don't come back for me
Don't come back at all

Who do you think you are?
Who do you think you are?
Who do you think you are?

The Connection

A Broken Heart

Even though this song is a little bit cliché and expected, I feel like it is the best song to go along with the poem I chose. Originally, I was not even planning on using this song. But then I looked deeper and found that this song did, indeed, go perfectly with the poem. They both symbolize a broken heart and the tragedy that comes along with it. Christina compares her heart break with a jar of hearts. Which is implying that the guy stole her heart and many others and just hoards them and takes pride in them. This is similar to the spider boasting about her kills and feasting on the hearts of her broken lovers. I may be stretching the truth a little, but I do believe that love can do so many things, good or even bad.

My Original Poem

It is Yours

For the days that I spent with you,

To the tears I cried too much over you,

All the years I had with you,

They, are all yours.

For the times I tried to show you,

To the endless nights I stayed up, just thinking about you,

All the dreams I had had for us.

They, are ALL yours.

For what cause do you not love me?

To what extent must I go for you?

All of my heart ache is for what?

What must I do to be yours......

You will never know what you did to me,

You will never feel the pain I feel,

You have killed all my hopes and dreams,

but still, my heart will always be, yours.
