A Letter From Mr. Cieciwa
May is flying by! We celebrated our 1st grade student joining the Rockland Circle of Readers today and it was a blast! The rain held off and the confetti flew honoring the hard work of all of our 1st graders and the staff, students, and parents who helped them along the way! We also wrapped up our spring STAR testing and AimsWeb testing and are excited to see how much our students have grown. Final scores will be available in the parent portal shortly. We also celebrated our staff during Staff Appreciation Week. A huge thank you to the RFA for their creative ways to show our staff how much the community cares. Our 3rd graders took a walking field trip and learned about local government and history with a visit to village hall and a meeting with the mayor, a tour of the Cook Mansion, and a sneak peek at Libertyville’s newest sweet spot, Sugarville, to learn about local business and sample some ice cream. Both our orchestra and choir performed at their spring concerts and put on a beautiful performance, and as an extra added treat, we had a performance by the Highland Symphony Orchestra that was truly out of this world! Bravo Mrs. Vente and Mrs. Janossy! Finally, our teachers have been hard at work starting training for our newly adopted reading program Amplify CKLA. It will be the last day before we know it, but we have lots of fun and learning ahead!
Staffing for the 23/24 School Year:
We do not have much change occurring at Rockland for the upcoming year. Mrs. Hyde will be joining Mrs. Wilson in 5th grade and Mr. Baker will be joining the 4th grade team. We are looking forward to a great 23-24 school year.
D70 Foundation for Excellence Kickoff to Summer:
The newly formed D70 Foundation for Excellence and Superintendent Rebecca Jenkins invite you to attend an afternoon of activities, games, food, and fun to celebrate an amazing school year. The event will be in the Highland Middle School Field and be on Saturday May 20 from 12:00-3:00 P.M. Student Registration is Open:
District 70 registration for new and returning students for the upcoming 2023-24 school year is open! Registering early helps Rockland plan staffing early in the year and hire earlier which ensures we have the best teachers available! Please register as soon as possible and if you know a family who will have a kindergarten student starting in the fall encourage them to register as well.
For new students, begin on the D70 website (d70schools.org) under Departments to Student Registration. Click on “New Kindergarten & New Student Registration” and begin filling out forms, starting with Preregistration.
To re-enroll your child, begin registration by logging into the PowerSchool portal.
Click the icon for SchoolForms and proceed to update and complete all requested information for your student:
If you have more than one child, select a child’s name from the bar just below the PowerSchool logo, then click the SchoolForms icon.
Verify that all pre-populated information is correct and enter any remaining information necessary to complete your student's registration.
Registration for each child in the family must be completed separately through the PowerSchool parent portal.
All registration fees may be paid online using RevTrak. District 70 will be covering the extra service fee charged by RevTrak. To pay with a credit card or e-check within PowerSchool, locate the "Balances" link on the left, then click on the "Make Payment" link which will take you to the RevTrak site. Fees must be paid and registration forms completed before July 1st, 2023.

What's the D70 Foundation for Excellence?
The District 70 Foundation for Excellence is a recently formed parent-run, non-profit organization dedicated to securing our legacy in D70 by providing additional resources to support our students and staff. As a 501c3 that can collect tax-deductible donations, the Foundation operates as a private fundraising arm that will help the D70 to enhance the education experience for our children.
The mission of the District 70 Foundation is to engage our community as public school advocates and to raise funds and develop resources to support innovation and educational excellence in our schools.
The goal of the District 70 Foundation for Excellence is to support, enrich, and enhance the education of all of our students and to provide them with the best opportunities to succeed in higher education, their career, and life.
While each of our D70 schools has its own amazing Family Association, the Foundation has a separate goal and mission.
3rd Grade News
Math - By Calla and Rebecca
In late April and early May we started to learn about 2 digit multiplication strategies and fractions! In multiplication, we learned about breaking up big numbers into numbers that are easier to multiply. For example: 7 x 13 =____, the way you figure this out is you split 13 into 10 and 3, then you multiply 7 by 10 which equals 70. Next, multiply 7 by 3 which equals 21. Finally you add your products which equals 91.
Fractions are whole numbers split into smaller parts like ½, ¼ and ⅙. We learned about fractions on a number line and we made these fun fraction tacos! Here’s how they worked: We got to write the fraction of what we put in a taco and then make a craft. For example, if I wanted half of my taco to be beef, I would add 6/12 or ½ brown paper to my taco craft. This is what we have been learning about in math!
Social Studies - By Morgan and Quinn
In April and May we have been learning all about our local government and public services. We made posters about the different departments and public services. Then we pretended we worked at City Hall and decided what department would receive complaint letters. We liked that our government comes up with laws and rules that are made by the people. We also learned that taxes are what people pay to make sure that all our public services are paid for. We look forward to our field trip to City Hall next week when we get to meet the Mayor and learn first hand how our local government is run.
Shark Tank - By Damon and Bryce
In April, we started working on a project based on the TV show, Shark Tank, for social studies! We made a slideshow for a business idea, and after we finished making the slideshows, we showed the class our ideas! There was even a Shark Tank day with teachers who were sharks! They were Mr. Vipond, Mrs. Sundh, Mrs. Weatherly, Mrs. Johnson, and Dr. Youngman. It was a great time and we learned a lot about running a business.

School Supply Kits:
Time to start thinking about next school year. The teachers have worked hard creating school supply lists for next year. Take the stress out of school supply shopping and order your kits at https://1stdayschoolsupplies.com/kits.php?sid=34603 . All kits must be ordered by June 30th. Our school will be entered into a drawing to win $2500 in supplies for our building if we can get 50 orders placed by the end of April.
5th Graders - End of the Year:
The End of the Year 5th Grade celebration will take place on Friday 6/9 at the Vernon Hills Aquatic Center from 7:30-9:30pm. We hope you can join the fun - pools, lazy river, and water slides! Snacks and goodie bags will be provided. Parents are welcome to attend but no siblings or other friends may attend this strictly 5th grade event, so please make appropriate arrangements. We are excited to get together one last time as Rockland Raptors before becoming official Highland Hornets!
