  • We are in desperate need of volunteers – please have a sign-up out asking for volunteers to help with PTA events (name, number, email, interests) FYI: Our most helpful volunteers have left the school. We need new folks to take over. As of right now we do not have a chair for the spring picnic. Ask parents to consider helping with one event. Leslie Kirk will contact them and they can shadow this year… thanks for any help you can provide recruiting new families.

    • No birthday invitations allowed at school or on the bus for the consideration of all students.

    • Communication: website, skylerts either voice or email, newsletters, teacher specific

      • Ask parents if they are not receiving my emails they should check to see if they have WLCSD Blocked and/or check in Family Access making sure their email address is correct.

      • REMIND - discuss briefly asking families to get signed-up

    • PTA and School Website is packed with information to stay connected and will be changing October 1st to a new platform that is easy to navigate

    • Please ask if anyone works for DTE – there is a wonderful program we would like to get involved with using DTE volunteers while earning money for our school

    • Attendance – alert your families that after 5 absences and/or tardiness, they will be receiving a letter as a way for us to communicate. Discuss the importance of being on time for school. By 8:55am students will be marked tardy. Additionally, if students leave before 3:59 pm, they are marked early dismissal.

Fall Book Fair 2015

Our annual Fall Book Fair will be hitting Mary Helen Guest early this year! It kicks off on September 16th at 6pm, the evening of our K-2 Curriculum Night, and runs through September 25th. The hours for the Book Fair will be 9am-4:30pm and 6:00-7:30pm on both Curriculum Nights. What a great way to get your children pumped up about new books and a new school year!

Of course we will also be hosting our G.R.A.N.D. breakfast event on Monday, September 21st from 8-8:45am. Students are invited to come enjoy a free breakfast snacks with their "Grandparent, Relative, Aunt/uncle, Neighbor or Devoted caregiver," while also visiting the Book Fair. This is not only a wonderful fundraiser, but a great opportunity to spread the love of reading!

Outdoor Center Field Trips

From Stuart -

1st, 2nd , 3rd, and 4th grade all have 4-45 minute classes. The cost is $6/student and parent chaperone (teachers are free). 3rd and 4th grade also have a $1/student material fee charge ($7/student). You book the busses to pick you up at your school at 9:30 am and you leave the Outdoor Center between 1:15 and 1:30.

1st Grade Classes include Insects, Spiders, Camouflage and Soil.

2nd Grade Classes include Severe Weather, Plants and Seeds, Hibernation, Animal Adaptations

3rd Grade Classes include Candle Making and Tin Smithing, Pioneer Life, Food Chain, Rocks and Solid Earth

4th Grade Classes include Alternative Energy, Ecosystems, Adaptations/Predator/Prey, Fossils

There are 2 Kindergarten Classes and each last 45 minutes. The classes taught are How birds survive in Michigan in the winter and Trees.

You book the busses to pick you up at your school at 9:30 am and you leave the Outdoor Center between 11:15 and 11:30. You will not eat lunch at the OEC. Cost is $4/student and parent chaperone (teachers are free).

Safe Snack List - Please display in rooms - This is what I sent to our families:

We continue to have students and some staff members with severe food allergies. For this reason, we will be sharing a Safe Snack List with you at Curriculum Night and it will be on our website. Even though many new items have been added, we thank you in advance for respecting any changes/restrictions that may be necessary in your child's classroom. Your child's teacher will inform you of any changes as they occur.

Our goal is to keep everyone safe.

New technology - Please be sure you do not have shelves, or other items preventing students from using the interactive white board.

Salad Bar - Begins September 29th and then every Tuesday. The Salad Bar takes the place of choice 2 on the menu.

School Store - Begins September 21st and then every Monday

Casual for a Cause - If you are planning to participate two things need to happen:

1. You pay $1.00

2. Wear your sticker
