Student Supervision and Awareness
We should never allow students to be in our classrooms or other areas of the building unsupervised. For example, if students are eating lunch with us, they should wait for us right outside the lounge door while we get our food and so that they may be seen by the adults sitting right there. Another example is first thing in the morning, please do not allow students into the building unless you plan to keep them with you or it is time for breakfast or the bell has rang.
Something else to consider, when you send a student to the restroom or office, keep track of the time they left your room and when they return. If they have been gone for longer than you believe it should take, contact the office right away to check on them.
The reason I am reviewing this information with you is due to recent situations from the news and nearby situations. The news recently reported a fight among two girls and one ended up passing away from the situation. The question is "Where was the adult supervision? Did they respond immediately?" In another situation, a student was delivering something and left the building out a side door without staff knowing. Luckily this child was seen leaving the building. What if this child was not seen leaving? How long would it take the teacher to realize the child did not return to the room?
Other things to consider include: one adult should be supervising no more than 100 students in the cafeteria (we have 1:60 ratio currently). On the playground, we may want to consider more adult supervision than what we currently have. Is one adult enough for one grade level? We may want to make some changes for next school year. If you have suggestions or ideas, please share!
Also, all field trips MUST have at least one certified staff member on the bus. We have not had any issues with this, but please continue to remember this for future trips.
