Exploring Careers

Thank you to the ACS CTE Department for visiting our Upper El students today for an exploration of careers. It was great to see Dr. Cheeks again and this time she brought the Career Educators for the middle and high schools. Students did an interest inventory and discussed the results to find out what careers they might want to pursue. Students will follow up with an online Career Game that helps them look at their own interests and what careers use their strengths. They also gave feedback to the team about future career exploration events that might be helpful. Ask your child what careers they explored today.

Sun Bread Assignment

These cute little Early Childhood students read the book, Sun Bread, with me this week and asked if I could give their parents an assignment. They loved the book and would like you to make Sun Bread with them at home. I've included the recipe and a read aloud video of the book below to share. Send us a picture of you, your children, and your delicious bread creation!

Omicron is on the rise! Please help us all stay safe by following the 3 Ws:

We are helping to keep you safe by:

  • using daily protocols for cleaning and sanitizing each room
  • saying no to volunteers or guest speakers for now
  • rescheduling field trips

You can:

  • practice hand washing and mask wearing (on the nose and under the chin)
  • keep students home when they have symptoms (even MILD ones)
  • limit group gatherings to help limit the spread in your own neighborhood

THANKS for helping us keep it safe at APS. If your child is a close contact, you will be contacted with instructions on quarantining. If you are not asked to quarantine, your child can come to school as long as there are no symptoms. If you are asked to quarantine, your absences will be excused. If you choose to quarantine your family, the absence will not be excused (but we totally understand). Children and adults that are just out of quarantine, will be asked to wear a mask during outside time for Days 6-10. Please talk to your child if this is the case, since other students may not have this same restriction.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

Visit the Find My Testing Place website to find a clinic or pop up testing site near you. Testing is available through StarMed Healthcare. To register for COVID-19 testing through StarMed, click here. Curbside COVID-19 Testing

Please let your child's teacher, Michelle Goldsmith, and/or admin know if someone in your household is positive or if your child has symptoms. We are all doing our best to stop the spread of Covid. If you have questions about symptoms or quarantine, please call or text Michelle Goldsmith (Covid Coordinator) at 713-4659.

LAST CALL for Field Trip Forms & Information on Enrollment

Many of you have been asking for a refresher for the enrollment information, including the links to the forms, so we are posting it again. REMEMBER that if you would like your child to attend the field trip to elementary schools next Tuesday, you will need to TURN IN THEIR PERMISSION FORM this week. Call if you have any questions.

Current Kindergarten - 4th Grade School Selection Form

If your child is a current Asheville Primary Kindergarten - 4th Grader, please know that your family has the opportunity to complete your child’s School Selection Form now - Friday, February 25th. This form is how we will learn more about your school preference, as families will rank their school choices 1st through 5th for 2022-2023.

Additionally, please know the February 25th deadline will allow the enrollment team to assess the numbers and go before the Board of Education. At this time, our recommendation will be to give priority placement to APS students at the school of their choice before placing other students.

Current Pre-K School Selection

Current Asheville Primary Pre-K students will complete their applications for the 2022 - 2023 school year during the district’s regular open enrollment window. This year, open enrollment begins on February 7th and ends on March 14th. Additional information can be found here.

School Videos

To support your family’s selection process, videos that showcase each of our 2022 - 2023 elementary schools and highlight their unique magnet themes can be found here.

Family School Tours

Families are also invited to visit each of our five elementary schools during one of our Thursday Open Houses. They will occur from 3:30 - 6:30 PM on January 13th, 20th and 27th. At this time, they are scheduled to occur in person. If there are any updates, they will be promptly communicated.

Optional School Tours for Students

And, current Asheville Primary Kindergarten - 4th Graders will have the option to tour all five of our other elementary schools in person. Because of the rise in community spread, optional student tours have been postponed until Tuesday, February 1st. Your child’s teacher will be sending home a field trip permission form. Staff will accompany students on these tours.
