The Principal’s Corner
Wow! I can’t believe that we are already in the month of September! My name is Kymberly Rodriguez and I am honored to be your child’s 9th grade principal at Waynesville High School. I will be sending out a monthly Freshman newsletter to keep our parents informed of all of the exciting things happening in our building and Ninth Grade Center. I look forward to working with you and your student to make their high school experience a success and one that they will look back on with fond memories. We are into the 1st six weeks grading period and I would like to encourage all parents to check their students' grades on E-school every week and to communicate with teachers. All teachers provide academic assistance before and after school. WHS also hosts an after-school program (WIN) daily after school Monday through Thursday and the Academic Student Achievement Program (ASAP) on selected Saturdays every month to provide students with academic assistance. The class of 2022 is off to a great start this school year. GO TIGERS!!!
Ninth Grade Center Highlights
History Classes going to the Renaissance Festival
The 9th Grade World History Classes will be taking a field trip on September 15 to the St. Louis Renaissance Festival to enrich our studies of the Renaissance unit in class. It is an excellent opportunity to bring learning to life. Students will have 6 hours to explore the festival. Students will be required to check in with chaperones during the day at the festival.
Algebra 1 using Chromebooks in Class
Algebra 1 is teaching our students how to use our Chromebooks and online resources as a primary means of completing coursework. The accessibility and functionality of the Chromebook vs. a computer are a bit different. We are also, for the first time, using a companion workbook that allows students to have a single location for all their coursework notes. With computers and companion books, we are able to have students keep their textbook at home and use the Chromebook as their textbook in class.
Science Classes Mock Exhibitions
PBL Science 9 students are trying to get hired for an exhibitor opportunity at the Science Center. They are developing an exhibit that they will be presenting to the "Science Center Committee" that will teach students the Engineering Design Process. The team that gets chosen for the job will have their exhibit displayed at the Science Center, the middle school, and the rest of the exhibits will be on display in the classroom for other students to visit. The exhibits will be on display from September 20 - 25.
ELA Info
ELA just finished our second set of student choice short stories. Students used Bradbury's "The Pedestrian", and Vonnegut's "Harrison Bergeron" to analyze plot structure, identify mood and tone, and examine how the point of view affects the reader's interpretation of a text. They will begin their last set of short stories reading either Richard Wright's "The Rights to the Streets of Memphis" or Sherman Alexi's "Halloween". At the end of next week, we will have our entry event for our first ELA PBL, on the topic of narrative writing.
FACS 9 Career Day
FACS 9 students and FCCLA members will "Gain firsthand knowledge from professionals and leaders in the entertainment industry and learn what it takes to operate one of America's Top 5 Amusement Parks during Silver Dollar City's Career Day!" As an extension of the careers unit, students will attend panel sessions with business professionals who will offer advice, insight and answer questions related to job skills. This, in turn, will be incorporated into each students' resumé & career portfolio.
The Counselor’s Corner
We are off to an exciting school year! It was not that long ago that I went to the middle school to work with the upcoming freshmen and now they are here! What a wonderful group of students that I have the pleasure of working with this year. I would like to list the top 10 things to do freshmen year:
- Work hard to get good grades!
- Set goals.
- Develop good study skills.
- Take challenging courses.
- Get to know your high school counselor.
- Get involved. Participate in extracurricular activities.
- Ask questions. Do not sit in silence.
- Explore careers you find interesting.
- Evaluate your personality, interests, and skills.
- Finalize your Individual Career and Academic Plan. Talk about it with parents/guardians.
The Academic Student Achievement Program (ASAP)
We are excited to introduce to you the Academic Student Achievement Program (ASAP). The ASAP is a partnership between teachers, counselors, and administrators which will provide additional academic support and tutoring for students grades 9 through 12. The goal of ASAP is to open lines of communication more between parents and students; to provide more one-on-one assistance with each individual student, and to provide a way for each student to achieve academic success before receiving final grades. Here at Waynesville High School, we are invested in our students’ learning and well-being and we’re sure you are too. You are encouraged to refer your student, son, or daughter to this program if you feel they need extra assistance. Students may also refer themselves.
September’s dates are:
