PCMS WEEKLY UPDATE
January 21, 2022
Good Afternoon PCMS Families!
You have most likely heard a lot about staffing shortages in schools throughout the metro area. To be honest, we are no exception to this and are being impacted by the shortage due to staff illness and a lack of substitutes. The way we work through these situations is we begin with finding coverage for classrooms that have the greatest impact on the most students. From there, we either end up cancelling specific classes, combining classes, and/or teachers fill uncovered classes during their plan times when they are usually planning lessons, meeting with their teams, or grading papers. Like almost everything else, this has definitely been a difficult challenge that we’ve had to work through. But, like everyone right now, we keep doing our best, giving grace, and being patient. And a little shameless plug here - there’s information below if you’d like to become a substitute!
Have an absolutely fantastic weekend and GO PIRATES!!
THIS WEEK'S CHARACTERSTRONG FOCUS
Here’s a quick recap of what we talked about this week in our CharacterStrong sessions - some good stuff right here!
6th Grade started to learn about Conflict Resolution. In this session, we wrestled as a class with several everyday interpersonal conflict scenarios presented in videos as a way to share and gain insights into ways to think about and handle conflicts.
7th Grade talked about Practicing Empathy. This was the final session about empathy. The first step was noticing how others are feeling and what's going on with them. The second step was about the importance of caring about others and caring when we can tell others are unhappy or could use some help. And this week we put together a plan on what we can do at school to act with empathy - putting our words and learning into action!
8th Grade focused on Emotions & Values. Early adolescents experience their emotions especially powerfully and we can all struggle to handle powerful emotions well. In this session, we practiced using our emotion regulation tools in order to help us work toward our goals.
CHARACTERSTRONG FAMILY DARE
Join us this week for our Family Dare called The Power of Why. We’ve all been there with our own kiddos - after school, you ask the question, “How was school today?” And to that, you get the always popular one-worded answer of “Fine,” or “Good”, or “Ok”. With this week’s dare, don’t let them off the hook with one word! Follow up with another question and get them thinking and talking about their day. And to put the cherry on top, ask them “Did you make someone’s day better?” Grand slam right there!!
PIRATES IN ACTION!
It was another busy week for our Pirates on the hardwood! Here's a look back at the week and all of the activities that our kids participated in.
Girls Basketball
On Tuesday our Lady Pirates traveled to Northgate MS. The B-Team won an exciting contest 14-12 with the A-Team falling short in a close one 20-16. On Thursday, they again hit the road at Grain Valley where the B-Team ran into a tough defensive team and fell 21-2. Grain Valley pulled away late in the A game with a 26-15 win due to clutch free-throw shooting late in the 4th quarter. Both teams begin their end-of-season tournaments next week.
Boys Basketball
On Tuesday both teams hosted Northgate MS. Team Platte (B) lost a close contest 25-21, and Team County (A) won a very competitive game that went into overtime 32-31. On Thursday our boys played against Grain Valley MS, Team Platte (B) won a thrilling contest 30-29 on a last second shot while Team Platte (A) fell short 48-32 against a very good Grain Valley team. Both teams begin their end-of-season tournaments next week.
