Studying the Holocaust
Mrs. McWilliams, Advanced 8th-grade ELA student's at Callahan Middle, participated in a cooperative learning activity called "The Holocaust Placemat Activity." Students were divided into groups of 4, each with an anchor chart and four different mediums containing information about the Holocaust. Students took turns evaluating each medium and recording their reactions to what they read, key details, or important information. Students then rotated around the anchor chart, taking turns evaluating the different information and adding to what their peers had written or responded to. Once all the students in their group responded to each medium, the group had to formulate a synthesizing statement on what the Holocaust was.
Osmosis
Mrs. Lesoine's Access Points class at Fernandina Beach Middle learned about osmosis by placing eggs in different solutions. First, the students placed the eggs in vinegar to dissolve the eggshell. Then the students measured the mass and circumference of the eggs before placing them in different solutions (water, soda, corn syrup, and milk). After letting the eggs sit overnight, the students again measured their mass and circumference to see which solutions were able to permeate the eggs' membranes. Mrs. Leary, the Access Points paraprofessional, led the students through the experiment.
