The Village Insider (COVID-19)

Aurora Community School

Governor Polis signed an executive order suspending in-person learning in public and private schools across the state from March 23-April 17; this means students will return to school on Monday, April 20th. However, the executive order directs schools to make every effort to provide alternative learning opportunities during this time, while taking into account the needs of our local community. We will be sharing updates about this, in the coming days!

Food Boxes: Friday March 20 (+Food on Ongoing Basis)

With COVID-19, we are doing our best, as a school, to support our families needs for food access.

APS is serving breakfast and lunch each Monday-Friday, at certain locations; see the photo above for the specific information!

In addition, this Friday, March 20 from 11 am - 1 pm, we will be offering:

- a hot meal from Qdoba

- small bags of perishable and non-perishable groceries, that you can cook at your home.

We will serve until we run out of items; so this is offered on a first come, first serve basis. To get a better sense of who might be interested, please complete this quick Google form (in English/in Spanish), so we can properly prepare!

Just so you know, we are currently working with a few of our partners to donate gift cards to our families; we will share updates, as soon as we have them!

Remote Academic Learning

Big picture
With school being out through April 17th, we don't want our students to be without access to academic content. Since this week is officially our Spring Break, we won't be sharing anything except resources on Facebook; however, in the coming days, you will receive detailed information about what our remote academic learning might look like; stay tuned!

Intercession: Trimester 2

Right before break, our students had the opportunity to engage in fieldwork connected to their essential question of the Trimester:

Kindergarten: What is freedom?

1st Grade: How did slavery strip humans of their rights? Who were the Human Rights Heroes of that time? How did they make an impact?

2nd Grade: What injustices did people face before the Civil Rights Act of 1964? How did Civil Rights Heroes respond to injustice? How can people respond to injustice?

6th Grade: How does living in a new country impact a human's rights?

See above and below for some fun shots of the kids at work! If you haven't had a chance to yet, ask them about their experiences!

Thanks to all of our parent/family volunteers; we couldn't have done it without you!

ACS Calendar for 2020-2021

Big picture
Attached is the DRAFT calendar for the 2020-2021 school year; you will see that the calendar is closely aligned to APS' calendar. We will send a final copy home at the end of the school year, and you will receive it again in your welcome packet at the beginning of the year!

After talking to students and staff, we are considering a change for next year: although we will remain open from 6:30 am - 6:30 pm each day, we are considering ending the academic school day at 3 pm. We've learned that, by this time, our students are in need of opportunities that stretch their brains differently; so are considering utilizing 3-4 pm to enrich their learning, alongside academic-focused community partners. However, we don't want to make any changes without your voice. Therefore, we ask that you take a moment to complete this poll to share your thinking on the change for the day.

March Community Event: CANCELLED

Big picture
Because of COVID-19, we will NOT host our March Community event; however, as soon as we are all clear, we will share an update on our off-campus soiree.

Big picture
Colorado Department of Education (CDE) has decided to cancel CMAS testing for this school year; therefore, regardless of when we return to school, our 6th grade students will not take their end of year assessment.

Building Update

Even with COVID-19, our building progress is on pace. The construction team is hard at work!

In the last two weeks, they have:

- carpeted almost every classroom

- installed all lighting in the building

- started to put in the fixtures in the bathrooms (now that the floor and paint is complete)

- wired the building for security measures

- installed the doors to classrooms/offices

We are set to have an inspection by the week of April 7th; once we have clearance, we will begin moving items into the building!

We can't wait to have our soft grand opening, so you can see the beautiful school your child(ren) will be learning in! Stay tuned!
