Your iphone, the whole WORLD

A lot goes into making an iphone, it comes from everywhere

Globalization

Globalization is a broadening, deepening and speeding up of world-wide interconnection in all aspects of life, it is a integration and interaction between people, governments, and countries.

It is usually driven by economy and international trades, economy is a major aspect of globalization. This process has effects on the environment, on culture, on political systems, on economic development and prosperity, and on human physical well-being in societies around the world.

In the upcoming future, globalization will continue on casting strong impacts on our daily life, making things easier to access and connecting people in a better way. But globalization could cause a lot of troubles too. like accelerating the speed of running out of natural resources, causing more pollution. And when most of the developed countries are trying to hire people in the developing countries with low pay, it causes a social resentment. It is unfair that how the poor labors are treated in the developing countries like China, Mexico, Vietnam... And if they fight back, the companies and factories could simply just move to a different place or a different country. Because of the benefits that globalization brings, the rich companies have more options, they could just hire people with outrageous wage and easily walk away from punishments.

Assembled in China

Iphone production steps

Just a small iphone is a combination of multiple technologies, numerous raw material(natural resources) and the hardworking of human labors. Iphones are assembled in China, which means that all the software and materials came from the other places such as Europe and India are eventually gathered in China and assembled together. EX: The much-touted fingerprint sensor was imagined in Florida, but manufactured in Asia by Taiwanese giant TMSC. The M7 motion co-processor is the brainchild of NXP, a company in the Netherlands, which has fabrication facilities in Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. Because China has a huge population and relatively cheap labor. Iphones are assembled here, In factories in China. And, according to the Chinese transportation map. The transportation is extremely convenient around the coastlines and big cities. So producers in China have easily access to shipment to the US and other countries that would purchase the iphone.

Solution

The extreme difference in natural resources, population and transportation between the south east and the north west is causing a huge social problems. The people living under worse conditions on the west are hard to improve without the supports of resource, labor and transportation. The Chinese government is trying to fix this situation my building more roads on the west and spending more money on the west to explore and develop economy. Only when a balance is reached between the east and the west, China can fully step into the developed country.

The 4 categories of Globalization

applications

  • cultural globalization: the rapid movement of ideas, attitudes, and values across national borders. Though the iphone is designed in the US, it has combined multiple ideas from all over the world. And that combination, cultural globalization made the product perfect. However, the mix of culture could collides and have negative effects such as social resentment and discrimination. Racism is a serious problem in the society, because people are reluctant to cultural globalization. People are always comfortable with the things they are familiar with, but as numerous different cultures meet in globalization, they combine. The fear of the loss of traditions getting replaced by new things that globalization brings never stopped. But people should start to realize only accepting new things can make they adapt to the society, and a cultural diversity would actually benefit the society.
  • economy globalization: a worldwide phenomenon wherein countries’ economic situations can depend significantly on other countries. Too many things are made in China. Chinese economy is depending on exporting goods while in the contrast, the US depends on importing. These both indicate a economy globalization. However, economy globalization is deepening the chasm between the rich and the poor that the developed countries are able to make money while developing countries receiving little. The rich companies usually come to the developing countries, building factories, hiring a huge amount of labor. They are creating more job opportunities and increasing the country's GDP while exploiting the rights of labors. In fact, the production country make little money, but the country who initiates it can make good profits from it. So globalization isn't helping a lot of poor countries. The developing shouldn't just give up on their roles in globalization, because it still helps them, though not as substantially. The developed country should try to keep a fair trade systems, helping others out.
  • environment globalization: The trade of natural resources. Environment is crucial to globalization, globalization cast huge impacts on environments too. They are interdependent, only certain environment, natural resources could help with the production and transportation of a product in globalization. But many natural resources are overused and will eventually cause a shortage. The fuel needed for cars are predicted to be running out in 30-50 years. Globalization made it much easier for the productions of cars and other things, many countries without the technology or resource to produce ares now have easy access to getting them overseas. So too many people are using cars, running out of the finite natural resources. Fuels are running out, same as many other resources. People should start to think of a replacement of the natural resources and don't overuse it, utilize it with strategy.
  • technology globalization: The exchange of information and ideas across the world. With the information shred, people innovate new things that would help the society in economy, life and many other aspects. The effects of technological affects on the global economic structure are creating immense transformations in the way companies and nations organize production, trade goods, invest capital, and develop new products and processes.Technology often serves as a catalyst of globalization that it could create new things making the production much more proficient. Like how machines would help the workers tremendously. In the old days, farmers will have to harvest by themselves, but now, a reaping machine can do all the work. Eventually, machines will be able to replace many of the labors, help things to get done faster. But that means people will be losing jobs when their roles are taken by the machines.

The only way that humans can keep on profiting from globalization is to be open to new changes, cultures and technologies, to keep fair and open trade while recognizing the importance of protecting the environment and natural resources for the next generations.

Globalization and me

Globalization exists in every subtle detail in my life, in everyone's life. Most of the products we are using aren't made in the US, which means every single product has to went through a long migration till the destination and being retailed. It sound unnecessary or complicated to produce things overseas and ship them all over the world. But in fact, this is more convenient that the whole world is sharing labor and natural resources. Globalization also helped me and other people to see more of the world out side of the country. In the 70's, it is hard to travel around, not to mention having a trip abroad. But now, the world is interconnected. Luckily, my family was able to bring me traveling to a lot of different places like South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia...Globalization opens up the gate between different countries, cultures, broadens people's horizons, gives us a different perspective of life.

However, globalization is never perfectly positive or fair. In China, I've heard of a lot of news about the poor treatments that the labors get, and many of them aren't even getting paid rightfully. I feel awful for them but they have to deal with it or else they will lose their jobs. It is pathetic that the society could hardly change that, because not everyone is willing to give up for others who are suffering. Only if they can put themselves in others' shoes, they can realize the bad influences globalization have brought to the society.

Another important thing that is happening right now, in China, is that the pollution is getting serious. The air quality recently became an important social topic in China that many cities are now suffering from haze cause by the pollution. The abnormally fast growth of Chinese economy due to globalization is slowly paying back to China in an extreme way. Globalization affects the environment. Whenever the international companies start to make more trades, produce more goods, pollution is created. No matter the goods are shipped my train or boat, it bring damages to the environment to some extant. Not to mention how much polluted air a factory could create per year. So when I got back to China for vacation, I was shocked by the air quality. Just 1 year ago, the sky was clean and pretty, and now its all hazy.
