Big picture

Circle Time

Alright everyone, time to begin! Answer the following questions with your family:

  • Your name
  • Your number from 1-4 that tells us how you are...1 is not so good, 4 is great.
  • What's something you've never done before?

Goodness of God

The Goodness of God

I love You Lord

Oh Your mercy never fails me

All my days, I've been held in Your hands

From the moment that I wake up until I lay my head

I will sing of the goodness of God

All my life You have been faithful

All my life You have been so, so good

With every breath that I am able

I will sing of the goodness of God

I love Your voice

You have led me through the fire

In darkest nights, you are close like no other

I've known You as a father, I've known You as a friend

I have lived in the goodness of God

Your goodness is running after

It’s running after me

Your goodness is running after

It’s running after me

With my life laid down I’m surrendered now

I give You everything

Your goodness is running after

It’s running after me

Find it in the Bible

In a physical Bible, or in a Bible app like YouVersion, look up Matthew 19:26. Read it together. Think and talk about this:

  • What is a miracle that you want God to do for you but often times it feels absolutely impossible? Let’s pray and ask for it.

  • Is there any area in your life that you just feel hopeless about and you need God to help you feel hopeful again?

Time for our Bible Story!

Two weeks ago, we read that Jesus was able to calm a storm by speaking. Jesus is God, so he has power over things that other people do not. He has power over sickness and death, and he has power over storms and over nature. Even though Jesus calmed the storm and showed the disciples his power again and again, they still do not know who he is! They ask each other: ‘Who is this, even the wind and the waves obey him?’ Remember that we know the answer. We know that Jesus is God, so he has power over the wind and the waves. But the disciples still do not know who Jesus is.

That leads us into our story today. Jesus is trying to show the people and His disciples who He is. Let’s read and see if they finally can catch on to who Jesus is and what Jesus does to show them.

Chapter 31: Filled Full!

Let's think about that a little bit!

So let’s put ourselves in the disciples’ shoes for a moment.

      • What would you do if Jesus told you to feed all those people but as you look around there is not much to feed them? You might think of ways to solve the problem just like the disciples did.
      • How did the disciples try to figure out the problem on their own?
      • We are a lot like the disciples in many ways. Let’s look at our own lives for a minute. How often do we try to figure out our own way to fix things? What are some examples?
      • What do you think Jesus was trying to teach his disciples by performing this miracle? Jesus was teaching them Who He was and that they can depend on Him for all their needs. Why do you think it was important that the disciples know Who God Is? Why is it important for us to know?
      • Why/How is Jesus able to feed all those people with such a small amount of food? Because He is the almighty powerful God. The disciples have seen Jesus raise the dead, heal the sick, calm a storm, and now they see him feed more than 5,000 people with a packed lunch. Miracles are often things people think can’t happen and are not natural to happen and they happen all the time and come solely from God! Anybody ever experience a miracle before?

Quiet time - just you and Jesus

Find a spot where you and Jesus can chat. Let’s imagine ourselves on that grassy field with all of those people finishing eating. Let’s sit quietly for a few minutes in His presence and imagine Jesus walking up to you. What do you notice about him?

We are going to take a few minutes of quiet for you to be with Jesus and to talk with him.

From our story today we learned that Jesus used a miracle to show the people just who He was. Let’s take some time as a few worship songs play to think about Who God Is To You? Find a worship song or two that you like, or replay the Goodness of God above. Take a few minutes with a piece of paper and a pen or pencil. Write one-worded words on your paper that come to your mind. Let’s see how many different ways we can describe who God is to us!

As you write those words remember that that’s who you are worshiping for who He is to you and take time to say Thank You to God for that. Examples of words could be….powerful, mighty, good, protector, friend, peace, strong, healer, comforter, judge, just, honest, faithful, etc.

Grab some grape juice and crackers, and take communion together with your family! If you don't have grape juice or crackers, that's ok! You can use any other juice, or even soda! The important thing is to remember what Jesus did for us.
      What Is Communion?
