Maverick Express - December 2017
MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL TODD CORSETTI
From the Mountainside staff to our Mountainside families, we would like to wish you all Happy Holidays during the month of December. The end of the year is always a time of reflection, and I find myself reflecting on the beginning of our existence at MHS. I have appreciated the staff’s willingness to dive deep and to work hard to get to know their content, our students, and our community. I am thankful for our community’s patience and support as we work through the inevitable peaks and valleys of opening a building. We are proud to continue to partner with you to create the best experience possible for our student body. We hope you enjoy the upcoming winter break and that you are able to spend quality family time together.
Congratulations to all of our students who were involved in fall athletics and activities. Our students represented themselves with class throughout the fall season and we are proud of their accomplishments. Winter sports and activities are heating up, and we hope to see you all attending some of the many games, matches, plays, and performances that are upcoming.
We had a great turnout for the third Principal’s Coffee in November. The Principal’s Coffee occurs the third Friday of each month at 9:00 AM in the community room. This is an informal opportunity to find out what’s new at Mountainside and/or to ask general questions. Our next Principal’s Coffee is Friday, December 15th.
If you have questions, you can reach me via email at: todd_corsetti@beaverton.k12.or.us
Sue Neeway is my amazing principal’s secretary, and she can be reached through the Mountainside Main Line at 503-356-3500 or by email at

important information about juul/juuling
Several of our neighboring schools are recognizing a growing threat that we want to make sure all families are aware of. If you are not fully aware of "Juuling," it would be helpful for you to read the article linked below. Juuls are the newest form of vaping and seems to be targeted directly at teens (especially girls). Our local high schools are seeing them at an increasing rate. We have yet to see them present at Mountainside, and are hoping to keep it that way. Juuls are also simple to convert to marijuana oil (THC). You need only Google "Juul THC conversion" for a quick two minute how to video.
Be it the nicotine intensity, or the THC, the concern is real and growing. Please take the time to read this article with your students and know what to look for. We will have informational meetings with all our staff and want you to be aware of this issue as well.
avid
Beaverton AVID Portland State University College Information Night! Thursday, December 14th 6:00-7:30 @ Beaverton High School-Library
Come hear Portland State University students share their experiences and insights of their college journey.
Beaverton AVID in partnership with PSU Student Leaders for Service and the Student Community Engagement Center will be hosting a PSU College Information Night for AVID Middle School and High School scholars and their families. All students and families are welcome to attend this evening program.
cell phone policy
Students are restricted at all times while on campus from using any recording feature, including camera, video or voice, to record any persons without their permission.
Students bringing cell phones to school do so at their own risk. Mountainside High School will not assume any liability for any lost, stolen or damaged phones or any other electronic devices. The school will not investigate lost or stolen cell phones. Our recommendation is to leave these devices at home to reduce the opportunity for theft.
counseling
The Counseling Team is proud to announce that this month it launched a Mountainside Counseling Team website. You can find us at: http://mountainsidecounseling.weebly.com/
On this site you will find information about Mountainside's academic programs, our College and Career services, Community Service requirements and initiatives, as well as Support Services for academic, mental health and basic needs resources. Information will continue to be added and updated over time, so we hope you will visit the site often!
PSAT
Attention Sophomore Families! Mountainside High School will be hosting the PSAT 10 on Friday, April 13, 2018. This is an official sitting of the PSAT 10 and is excellent preparation for the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test which should be taken in the fall of Junior year. There will be space for 150 test takers. Any sophomore interested in the PSAT 10 should save this date and watch for registration information in March.
IB program
Thank you to all the students and parents who were able to attend our IB Night on November 6. We were able to outline the philosophy of the IB program, both the IB Middle Years Program and the IB Diploma Program, as well as provide some information about the researched benefits to students who participate in IB programs. We also outlined what our IB Diploma Program will look like in 2018. If you missed it, you can check out the presentation Powerpoint under the IB tab (in Academics) on the MHS website. We plan to have an IB Diploma Program Night on Thursday, Jan 25, 2018. While all are welcome, this night will focus more on those considering the IB Diploma Program and what that will look like for them.
I am very pleased to share that the MHS staff has decided to implement an IB for All model with 11th grade core Social Studies. All students will be required to take the first year of IB Global Politics as a junior to help fulfill their three credit SS graduation requirement. We chose the IB Global Politics course for its “current events” nature, its relevance to today, and the potential to reach a wide range of students. A student may choose to complete this two-year IB course during his/her senior year at the standard or higher level either as a stand-alone class or as part of the full IB Diploma. If a student chooses not to do so, the student will be able to choose another non-IB course to finish the Social Studies graduation requirement in his/her senior year. This course looks excellent on a high school transcript and will receive a weighted grade. We believe that the Social Studies department is ready, willing, and able to build skills in the 9th and 10th grade that will serve students and make them successful in this course.
As always, if you have any questions about the IB Diploma Program at MHS, please do not hesitate to contact me at rebecca_bair@beaverton.k12.or.us
leadership
Mountainside Leadership has organized three ways for our students, staff and community to help families in need this holiday season:
- Adopt-a-Family: Each participating Advisory class will be sponsoring a family in need from Conestoga Middle School, a feeder of MHS.
- Giving Tree: Will help create a better holiday season for students in need at Chehalem Elementary School, another feeder of MHS. There is a tree by the courtyard windows covered in tags, each of which have the name of a different child and what he/she most wants for the holidays. Please help us bring joy to these children this holiday season by taking a tag, purchasing the gift the child has requested, and bringing the unwrapped gift to Mr. Reinholt’s office by Friday, December 15th.
- Extra items: If you would like to contribute extra items, general gifts and necessities, these are always appreciated as well. We will be using these items to cover families in need here at MHS. Again, you can turn these items into the main office or directly to Mr. Reinholt's office. Please specify that these are extras.
Thank you!
SAL NAJJAR SELECTED FOR STATE STUDENT COUNCIL EXECUTIVE BOARD
Sal Najjar, from Mountainside High School, has been elected to serve a term of one year on the Executive Board of the Oregon Association of Student Councils. The elections took place at the Annual Fall Conference in Seaside, where a group of 1500 students and advisors from over 100 high schools were in attendance.
As an Executive Board member, Sal will represent his region and join a group of ten other youth Board members and ten adult Board members from around the state. His duties include planning and presiding over two statewide conferences, communicating with schools in his region, writing newsletter articles and participating in policy decisions for the association.
“The student board members are extremely valuable to our association. They are also outstanding leaders in their own school and community. They each bring their own unique perspective to our statewide association,” states Sara Nilles, OASC Executive Director.
The Oregon Association of Student Councils, founded in 1949 and sponsored by The Confederation of Oregon School Administrators (COSA), serves middle and high school students and advisers from around the state. They provide conferences, workshops, online newsletters and summer leadership camps designed to heighten student leadership development and improve school climate. In the last few years OASC has also added international service experiences and a Capitol Ambassador program. Our mission statement guides the group: Committed to leadership development with a vision for service, involvement and action.
