Weekly Teacher Feature
Mrs. Reyer
Mrs. Reyer teaches English/Language Arts (9th and 10th), Freshman Composition, and AP Language (11th). She is also the Beta Club sponsor, as well as a Class of 2022 sponsor. She is in her fifth year of teaching!
She didn’t always know what she wanted to teach, but she knew that she wanted to try to make as many people’s lives better as she could. Now that she is a mom, she tries even harder to treat her students the way she wants Case to be treated. She loves the moments when her students start thinking they are as important and bright as she thinks they are. Her dad taught for thirty-six years, her grandmother for thirty-six years, and her grandfather for fifty-four years. They taught with kindness and created a legacy that is now in the third generation! She started dating her husband in high school and their son, Baby Case, is their WORLD!
Her husband says her spirit animal would be a squirrel! Her favorite shows to watch are One Tree Hill, The Vampire Diaries, The Office, and Friends. She loves pep rallies because the whole staff and student body are in one place! She went to college at Calhoun Community College, Athens State University, and the University of West Alabama. She likes playing with her hilarious baby, going to TJMaxx, and eating Chick-fil-A or Bojangle’s. When she was in high school, she was involved in band, basketball, Math Club, Beta Club, Science Club, Spanish Club, and the Prom Committee. She was a class officer, a club officer, and a member of the First National Bank Board. Her favorite class when she was in high school was band. Her favorite places that she has visited are Gatlinburg, Tennessee and Panama City Beach, Florida. When she was growing up, she wanted to be a teacher or a Sonic girl for the skates!

AHSAA “BYLAW OF THE WEEK”
“BYLAW OF THE WEEK”
Scenario: Sally, a 9th grade volleyball and softball player, and her family reside in Huntsville within the Grissom High School (HHS) attendance zone, and Sally attends GHS. However, in October, Sally decides she would like to play softball at Westminster Christian Academy (WCA), also located in Huntsville. Therefore, she withdraws from GHS and enrolls in WCA with the understanding she will sit out her freshman year. Unfortunately, in the February just before the softball season starts, due to financial constraints, the family withdraws Sally from Westminster Christian Academy and re-enrolls her at GHS on February 15th. Question: Because Sally established her eligibility at GHS, can she return to HHS and be immediately eligible and participate in softball that season or is she eligible at the beginning of summer under the home rule and eligible to participate in volleyball in August?
Rule 1, Section 12. Transfer Rule:
A student that enrolls in one school and later transfers to, or enrolls in, another school shall not be eligible immediately to represent the latter school in any athletic contest.
Exception 4: Home Rule: If a student attends a member school that does not serve the area where the student’s parents reside, the student may return to his/her home school and be eligible following the last day of the school year or first day of school if all other requirements are met. If the change of schools is made after the school year has started, the student will not be eligible until the beginning of the next school year. (This does not change the existing rule concerning transfers within overlapping school zones in which both schools serve the area where the student’s parents reside.)
Overlapping School Zones: A student whose parents reside in an area served by more than one school lives in the school zone of each school, thus in overlapping school zones. A student who changes schools within these overlapping school zones is ineligible for one year at the new school.
Note: A student that transfers from a school within these overlapping school zones remains ineligible for one year at any of the other schools within these overlapping school zones.
Interpretation: Although Sally’s family resides in Grissom High’s attendance zone, their address is located in an area served by more than one school; therefore, the schools are “overlapping”. As a result, Sally cannot return to GHS and be immediately eligible or eligible at the beginning of the summer under the home rule. Sally is ineligible to participate in athletics at Grissom High School for a period of one year from the date of re-enrollment. She will be eligible to compete on February 15th of the following year.
Penalty: If Grissom High allows Sally to participate in softball for her freshmen year or volleyball at the beginning of her sophomore year, all games in which she participated in would have to be forfeited because she participated as an ineligible athlete. In addition, the school would be assessed a monetary fine and placed on probation for a period of one year. Furthermore, once Sally becomes an eligible athlete, she would be required to serve restitution for the games in which she participated as an ineligible athlete.
Proactive Measures: The principal of the receiving school is ultimately responsible for evaluating all transfers and new enrollees. Each case is unique and must be thoroughly investigated to ensure the school remains compliant to AHSAA transfer rules. To be proactive, the principal and athletic director should assume all transfers are ineligible to compete immediately. Thereafter, they should analyze the exceptions under the transfer rule to determine if the student is eligible to compete. If the school has questions, the principal or athletic director may contact the AHSAA for an interpretation.
