The battle of Vicksburg begun between May and June 1863 Ulysses S. Grant’s armies invested the city and entrapping a Confederate army under Lt. Gen. John Pemberton.The loss of Pemberton’s army in the Confederacy was effectively split in half. Grant's successes in the West boosted his reputation.
