Harrison Park Weekly Update

February 13th , 2023

From the Desk of Principal Leah Dickey

As a reminder students should not bring money and other expensive items to school. Unfortunately, we have had a few situations where cash was brought, shown to other students and then went missing.

There is rarely a time when students are given an opportunity to purchase things at school and for the most part money is not needed. Occasionally, we may have candy grams and the book fair, but these situations are few and far between.

Middle School Winter Activity Day!

We will be hosting a middle school activities night on Friday, February 24th from 3:45-5:15pm in the school gymnasiums for grades 6th-8th. There will be some academic criteria in order for students to be eligible to attend. We are excited to host this fun evening for our students. If you would like to volunteer to help, please contact the school office.

Immunization Exclusion Day is February 15th

Our school nurse, and health assistant have made every effort to make sure families are aware if your student is in need of updated or missing immunizations. If you received a letter or a phone call that your student needs updated immunizations, exclusion day is February 15th. If your student is not current on immunizations they will not be able to attend school until proof of immunizations are current. If you need support with finding a location for vaccinations, please reach out to Kelly, health assistant at Harrison Park for locations. 503-916-5700 ext. 79801.

Attendance

As we begin the new term, we wanted to send some reminders out around attendance. With your help, our goal is to increase our students' understanding of the importance of consistent attendance and coming to school each day.

The start time for our 6th-8th students is 8:45am and for K-5th students, it is 9:00am. We know mornings can be hectic and take a lot of effort to get out the door, but we at Harrison Park are working on increasing attendance and decreasing our tardies this quarter. We hope you will partner with us on this endeavor! Middle school families can check the number of absences (“Abs - total”) and tardies (“Lates - total”) for each class on the most recent report cards sent home.

One impact of frequent tardies is that students who are arriving even 15 minutes late to school on a regular basis are missing an hour or more of school each week. If this is a regular occurrence, it can mean hours of lost instructional time. Additionally, students arriving late and missing school often report feeling anxious and their anxiety can increase the more they are absent. As a result they struggle to focus in class and even more learning time is lost.

Please join us in reaching our goal to increase attendance and decrease tardies! If you need help regarding your students’ attendance, please contact Lindsay Alex, our Social Worker, or our school counselors, Ana Kennedy (K-4) and Ruth Howard (5-8).

WiFi Hotspots from Multnomah County Library

Hello,

The Multnomah County Library has free WiFi Hotspots for students who need them.

My name is Alonso Melendez and I work at the Multnomah County Library. I’m writing to you today to share the library’s free Tech Lending Program: WiFi hotspots are available now, without fees or bills, even if lost, stolen or broken.

Reserve a student WiFi hotspot

The hotspots provide an unlimited internet plan that is unthrottled and can provide internet connectivity for several devices simultaneously. Students will be able to do their homework, and stream music or video without worrying that they will run out of data.

We currently have approximately 400 hotspots designated for students ready to borrow. With a Multnomah County Library card, eligible students can borrow a hotspot for the rest of the school year, due back on June 30, 2023.

Students must be low income, attending school in Multnomah County Residents, and have a library account in good standing, i.e. no bills over $50, or library exclusions.

You can request hotspots from the Tech Lending Program for students using this referral form, or you can provide students or their family/guardians my contact information:

Alonso Melendez
(503) 351-6219
alonsom@multcolib.org

and I will respond quickly to connect the student and their family with a hotspot.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Drop off and Pick up

**Please be aware that our crossing patrol is up and running, please be mindful of them when using the parking lot.

Students need to be dropped off at the curb and make every effort to exit curbside.

Please make an effort to utilize the crosswalk near the 1st-3rd grade entrance.

Avoid parking in driveways, bus zone and blocking others in.

Please arrange for where your children will be picked up - a suggestion is all of your children meet in the youngest child's exit location.

We are noticing long delays to turn onto Division, please be mindful of this and patient as others pick/drop off their children.
