Steps to Becoming a US Citizen

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older to file an application
  • Permanent resident for 5 years (also requires a green card)
  • Be able to prove that you have been physically present in America for at least 30 months out of the 5 years
  • Show that you've lived for at least 3 months in the stare or USCIS
  • Have good moral character
  • Demonstrate an attachment to the principles of the U.S. Constitution
  • Read, write, and speak basic English
  • Understanding of U.S. history and the U.S. government
  • Take oath of allegiance to the United States

Steps to Become A Citizen

  1. Determine if you're ready to become a U.S. citizen
  2. Determine if you're eligible to be a U.S. citizen
  3. Prepare your application
  4. Submit your application
  5. Go to biometrics appointment (if available)
  6. Complete the interview
  7. Receive a decision from USCIS on your form
  8. Receive a notice to take the oath of allegiance
  9. Take the oath of allegiance
  10. Understand U.S. citizenship
