Who is Michelangelo?
(6 March 1475 – 18 February 1564) He was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, poet, and engineer. Michelangelo was apart of the High Renaissance who exerted an unparalleled influence on the development of Western art .
Michelangelo Personal Life
His work demonstrated a blend of psychological insight, physical realism and intensity never before seen. Michelangelo learned from and was inspired by the scholars and writers in Lorenzo’s intellectual circle, and his later work would forever be informed by what he learned about philosophy and politics in those years.
The Creation of Adam
The Creation of Adam is a fresco painting by Michelangelo, forming part of the Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted circa 1511–1512. It illustrates the Biblical creation narrativefrom the Book of Genesisin which God breathes life into Adam, the first man.
The Last Judgment
It is a depiction of the Second Coming of Christ and the final and eternal judgment by God of all humanity. The souls of humans rise and descend to their fates, as judged by Christ surrounded by prominent saints including Saints Catherine of Alexandria, Peter, Lawrence, Bartholomew, Paul, Sebastian, John the Baptist, and others.
Michelangelo: Architecture, Poetry, Morality
Michelangelo designed the iconic dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome . Among his other masterpieces are Moses (sculpture, completed 1515); The Last Judgment (painting, completed 1534); and Day, Night, Dawn and Dusk (sculptures, all completed by 1533).From the 1530s on, Michelangelo wrote poems; about 300 survive. Many incorporate the philosophy of Neo-Platonism–that a human soul, powered by love and ecstasy, can reunite with an almighty God ideas that had been the subject of intense discussion while he was an adolescent living in Lorenzo de’ Medici’s household.
