The Winch Word
January 2018
News and Notes From Oliver W. Winch Middle School
Some guidelines are:
1) This should not be used to report an emergency. If the situation is an emergency, an adult should be told immediately.
2) This hotline can be used to report incidents that students are personally involved in or incidents that they have witnessed as a bystander.
3) This hotline should not be used to send inappropriate or fabricated texts or questions that do not relate to issues of harassment or bullying. Continued inappropriate use of this system will result in an investigation of the associated phone number.
4) This hotline is for texting only. Phonecalls will not be received.
5) Anyone in the OWWMS or wider SGF Schools community that has encountered an issue while on school property is welcome to use the system.
6) The system will only be active during school hours.
The hotline will be available as soon as the signs, pictured below, go up in our common areas. This is one more tool in our daily toolbox to give students a voice, and we are hopeful that it will prove to be a helpful one.

No Place For Hate 2017-18
What is No Place For Hate? Here is some information taken directly from their website:
"No Place For Hate is designed to enhance a culture of respect and to create a safe, bully-free learning environment for students at all grade levels. In compliance with the New York State Dignity Act, No Place For Hate offers schools the opportunity to be recognized for their staff development and student training related to bullying, harassment and discrimination. Since ADL is dedicated to the mission of ending hatred and bigotry toward all people, we offer No Place for Hate at no cost to schools. Schools that fulfill all requirements will receive a personalized No Place For Hate banner at the end of the school year. Click here to view a brochure."
We kicked off this journey with all students having the choice to sign the Resolution for Respect in September while hearing from Coach Rich Johns and his Act With Respect Always message. The resolution allows them to declare their dedication to treating everyone with kindness and respect. In addition, we will have three separate activities that focus on ideas of anti-bullying, tolerance, and diversity from now through the spring months. What makes these activities unique is that students will be active participants, rather than simple passive attendees.
Our first all-building activity happened on Thursday, December 14th, and you can read more about it below.

How can I find out what's going on?
I'm glad you asked! There are a variety of ways to find out about OWWMS.
- Our school & District website (including daily calendars of activities)
- Remind text message service (see instructions below)
Our main form of communication will be through these options as well as the School Messenger Call Out system. Please make sure we have your accurate phone number and that you update your number with us in the main office should it change at any time during the year so you receive information about upcoming events. As always, you may call our office, teachers, or administrators if we can help you in any way. There are a lot of options. Choose the one that is best for you.
