For more information about the North Carolina Essential Standards for Music click here.
We are having fun in the music program at PUE !
K: Besides learning some basic music elements, Kindergarten, CCK and 1st grade have been learning lots of songs in preparation for their Holiday programs in December.
Our kindergarten students learn about expressing recognition of high and low pitch through movement. Students also learn about steady beat. Another main focus is singing with appropriate voice in a group.
1st: Our first grade students learn about quarter notes, quarter rests, beamed 8th notes. Additionally, they study Pentatonic music. Global education is incorporated within the music classroom as they learn about continents and study Asian music. Students also learn about improvisation.
2nd: Second grade has learned about the history of our National Anthem,Star Spangled Banner, the science of sound and are beginning songs about the earth and caring for it. Science is embedded into music content as students study sound and vibration.
3rd: Third graders are excited to pay tribute to Veterans as we approach our annual Veterans Day/Patriotic Concert in November. Students focus on Patriotic Music and studying American music history.
4th: Students have been learning about composers and instruments of the orchestra as they prep for the awesome field trip to hear the NC Symphony. Students learn about the composers, the style, the musical elements represented in the pieces and the families of instruments. Students learn to play the recorder which provides great development should they want to explore other woodwind instruments later. Students may also join the chorus in 4th grade.
5th: Students began playing Ukuleles, a new addition to the curriculum this year, and are having a blast. Students engage in learning about American Music History. Various musical genres from Revolutionary War Songs to Blues to Rock are studied. Video tutorials are available on the PUE music webpage.
We have almost 40 students in our 4th and 5th Grade Chorus and are working hard getting ready to audition in December, for Wake County Pieces of Gold.
I encourage you to visit my Music website throughout the year to get more details about all we do!
Announcements
Global Service Project
Pleasant Union's sustainable development goal for November focuses on zero hunger. Food insecurity is an issue that impacts global and local communities. Zeroing out hunger can include discussions about poverty around the world. This can also include conversations about children and adults having access to balanced, healthy foods. For example, in some communities produce is very difficult to access. In order to support the needs of families experiencing hunger, we will have a food drive.
November 4th-November 15th
Pleasant Union will be holding a Food Drive for Wake Relief!
Every day during arrival time there will be bins and K-Kid volunteers located in the front lobby waiting to take, organize, and record your donations! Wake Relief will take any non-perishable items you would like to donate but below there is a list of items they are always in need of and can use:
Tuna
Chicken
Spaghetti Sauce
Beans
Green Peas
Mixed Vegetables (Carrots or Spinach)
Corn
Cereal

1 Pound Bags of Rice

November 20th @5:00 we will be loading up the donated items and delivering them to the Wake Relief food pantry.
If you are interested in volunteering your time to help with that process please contact Ms. Schreier @ lmschreier@wcpss.net
Veterans Day Concert
Veterans Day is less than a month away, and Pleasant Union always enjoys recognizing families and friends who have served in the Armed Forces. As well as two concerts of patriotic music, we do a wall in the lobby highlighting those people who are our heroes. If you have a special veteran in your life that you would like to recognize on this wall, please consider sending in a copy of a photo of this person. Please label the back of any photos so that they can be returned.
For more details about the concerts, please check out Ms. Freer’s Google site on the Pleasant Union webpage.
Thanks for helping us honor our veterans!

Visitors to PUE
Thank you to all parents, visitors, and volunteers for joining us on campus. Please remember that upon arrival to campus you must report to the front office to use our sign in system called Lobby Guard. You have to use your driver’s license to sign in through Lobby Guard so ensure you and any guests have that available to sign in with. Additionally, you will be asked the reason for your visit. Parents may join us for lunch any day! If you would like to visit your child's classroom or observe, please set this up with the teacher in advance. The safety of our campus is our top priority. It is important that we know exactly who is on campus each day.
Readvolution
For the third consecutive year, we will partner with the Carolina Hurricanes to bring READvolution to all of our elementary schools. This exciting partnership will support a community-wide literacy campaign around daily reading outside of school, plus allow students the chance to attend a Hurricanes game. This year the READvolution time frame will be between Monday, Sept. 30 and Friday, Dec. 6, 2019. Students will be able to be part of this event by reading daily for 20 minutes! Parents will log their students reading times on the online log in. We appreciate this opportunity to build lifelong readers and learners in our community.
Make Up Day
As a reminder we will have a Saturday Make Up Day for Track 1, 3, 4 on Saturday, November 16. The hours are 8:45am - 12:45pm. There will be no breakfast or lunch served or specials held that day.
