Technology This Month
Dear Q300 Families,
During our first week back from the break, kindergarten and first grade students began exploring MicroWorlds Jr. We're starting with the painting center. Students will explore a variety of tools to create digital art. First graders will add sentences to their artwork describing it or giving it a title.
Second graders wrote New Year's resolutions using Pages. They are discovering how to get creative with how text flows through the document, wrapping the text around an image, using different fonts and colors as well as making text bold, italicized and/or underlined. They will begin publishing their non fiction writing pieces from class next week. The first step will be creating a cover page with pictures. We'll discuss "copyright" and "fair use".
Third and fourth graders have began a new project in Scratch. Their task is to create a knock knock joke project with a focus on proper timing, creativity, scripts (a collection or stack of blocks that determine how sprites interact with each other and the backdrop), and the design process. This project is meant to give me information about their current skill level -- which varies greatly. Based on this project, I'll be able to pull small groups of children who need a bit more direct instruction and work with them so that they become more advanced with Scratch. It will also allow me to design more challenging projects for students who excel. Students were given a rubric to help guide them while creating this project. I look forward to seeing what they come up with and will share some projects on my website.
