Welcome Fall!
As part of Fire Safety month, Fireman Tony will be coming to our classroom on Monday, October 14 to do a fire safety presentation with us. We just had our first fire drill at school this week. Fireman Tony always talks to the students about making sure they have a fire safety plan in place at home. Now is a a good time to review the fire safety procedures at your house too!
Halloween is just around the corner! I hope you are planning on attending our annual John Powers Family Halloween party on Thursday October 24. A flyer went home with the students last week. On Thursday October 31, we will be walking to the Victory Centre Retirement Community in Vernon Hills for our annual Fall celebration. We have developed a nice relationship with the senior residents at the center. The seniors have become such positive role models in the lives of our students. On October 31 in the afternoon, we will be having our PTO party with our friends at Townline School. Please send your child's costume to school in a bag on October 31.
Our picture day at John Powers Center is on Thursday, October 17. This is only individual pictures. We take our classroom group picture in the spring. Information and an order form was sent home last week. You are also welcome to place your order online. If you need another order form, please let me know.
Parent-Teacher conferences will be on Monday, November 25 at night and Tuesday, November 26 in the morning. As soon as I receive back all the time/date requests, I will send home a confirmation form to let you know the date and time of your conference. If you haven't had a chance to send in your form yet, please fill it out and send it to school when you get a chance.
Just a reminder: Our library day is on Thursdays at 2:00 PM. Please help your child be responsible and make sure they bring their books back to school every week. If they do not have their books on Thursday, they do not get to participate in the library check out.
Please help your child be responsible and check his/her backpack every day. Some of the backpacks are full of papers! If they have homework, the homework will be in the red folder. They are still learning so we need to teach them how to be organized :)
The students need to have gym shoes if they want to participate in PE. You are welcome to leave a pair of gym shoes here at school to be used during PE. Some students are coming to school with boots and loafers. Unfortunately, they are not allowed on the gym floor if they don't have gym shoes on.
Let me know if you have any questions or comments!

Literacy/Literatura
Don't forget to sign and send in your child's reading log at the end of each month! The students should read for about 20 minutes a night during the school week. Don't worry if they miss a night or two. The students will write the number of minutes they read on the calendar. On the back of the calendar, they can write the books that they read. They can read the same books over and over if they want! They can read to a sibling or a friend. At the end of the month, when the students bring back their reading logs, they get a prize from our prize box. We don't count how many days they read on the calendar, we just want them to find some time at home to read! As you know, research tells us that the more children read, the better readers they become. Please let me know if you would like me to send home some books for your child to read at home! Please send the signed October reading log back to school on November 1st. I will send home the November reading log on November 1st!
This past month, we have been working on various phonics and grammar skills.
During writing time, we are focusing on writing clearly and correctly (capital letters at the beginning of the sentence, no random capitals throughout the sentence, correct punctuation, proper spacing, etc.). They are learning about the writing process (brainstorming, drafting, editing, and publishing). We have started the year writing narratives.
During reading lessons, we have started our discussion on character analysis. We will work on this concept throughout the school year. We have started talking about character traits. We are discussing our own character traits right now. The students have a list of character traits to use as a reference to describe the characters as they are reading.
MATHEMATICS Matematicas
2nd Grade
The students are continuing to learn about addition and subtraction concepts and anddition and subtraction fluency. We are also focusing on problem solving. The students have a template they use to help them solve problems (underline what you know, circle what you want to know, draw a picture, write a number sentence, label your answer). We are using everyday math problems to assist us with understanding problem solving.
3rd Grade
We have started our unit on multiplication concepts. Currently, we are building on the students' fluency with addition (4+4+4+4+4=20 so 4X5 =20). They use repeated addition to find the total of a group. We also notice patterns. The students are learning to use the language of multiplication as they understand what factors are and "differentiate between the size of groups and the number of groups within a given context."
2do. grado
SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES Estudios Sociales
Our classroom garden is really growing! Soon, we will be able to start harvesting some of our plants!
We are continuing to learn about the ecosystem. We are learning about how a living thing evolves through the life cycle and how organisms survive. We are learning about how living things grow and change. We are currently focusing on plants. We are exploring how plants survive (photosynthesis). We are discovering cause and effect relationships. We did a reader's theater play in class about plants. Each student had a different part in the play (stem, root, leaf, soil, sun, seed and rain). It was a fun way to "act out" the life cycle of a plant!
