Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Autumn Term - Issue 14

A word from Mr Broom

My apologies everyone for this rather late newsletter. I've written below about school attendance being at the lowest we've had since September 2017 and my own attendance this week felt to 60%, with a nasty bout of Sinusitis. Hopefully I'm on the mend now and I'm looking forward to returning back to work for our final week on Monday morning.

You can feel the festive buzz around school, especially after what can only be described as amazing nativity performances by our Reception and Key Stage 1 children. Their performances were sensational and really put us all in the Christmas spirit.

We don't do Christmas jumper day at Sherburn Hungate... we do Christmas dress up week! All next week, we'd like to invite everyone to wear something a little Christmassy with their usual uniform. I've got my jumper ready and can't wait!

Have a lovely final week before the holidays. It's party time!

Choir Carol Performance

Being absent on Friday meant that the choir were unable to perform this year's carol concert for their parents. Not to worry though, I've rearranged it for Tuesday afternoon from 3:15pm until 4pm. Parents of those children in choir are more than welcome to attend.

In my absence, I have been made aware that a parent took it upon himself to swear at a member of staff and in earshot of many children. This behaviour is not acceptable and I will be dealing with the individual in the early parts of next week. He will need to apologise to my colleague for his behaviour in the first instance.

I'm sure you will all support us in the importance of ensuring our playground mornings and afternoons are free from such behaviour and if you hear anything untoward, please bring it to my attention immediately.

Y6 Uniform and Responsibilities Reminder

Having spoken at length to Miss Mackay this week regarding the uniform in Y6 and class responsibilities, we have noticed an increase in children who are:

- Not wearing the red Y6 tie

- Wearing inappropriate footwear (fashion boots, trainers, etc.)

- Not completing tasks involving school diaries.

It's really important that our oldest children in school demonstrate and model the expected behaviour of all our pupils, and things need to change for some of our Y6 pupils.

Nut Allergies

If your child brings either a snack or a pack up to school, please help us to protect some of our children who have nut allergies by checking that the products you send with them do not contain any nuts. Thank you.

School Attendance

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Reception children who are our attendance champions in school this week with 97.7%!

Our average attendance this week is 95.1% which is the lowest attendance we've had in school since September 2017!

We have a small number of children whose attendance is well below the national expectations. These children are known as persistently absent when their attendance falls below 90%. I will be making telephone calls to parents of these children.

Thank you for your continued support with our attendance drive. It is really appreciated.

Mobiles on Site

Our teachers have planned exciting lessons for all our children and when they leave school, we're confident that they will want to share their day with you. Conversation is really important to your child's development and for this reason, we're asking that you refrain from using your phone on the school site at drop off and pick up times.
