Genoa Football is No. 1 in Ohio AP Poll
In the second Associated Press state high school football poll of the 2018 season, Genoa has reached the No. 1 ranking for the first time in school history! Genoa (4-0), the preseason favorite to win the Northern Buckeye Conference, moved up from No. 2 in last week’s AP poll after beating Lake 34-27.
“It is very cool to get recognized by the writers,” Genoa coach Paul Patterson said. “It’s definitely an honor, but the tough part now is trying to stay there because everybody’s going to be gunning for us. It’s good for us to feel that pressure and to take it on.”

A Word from: Mr. Ohlemacher
Comet Nation,
We're proud to present Genoa High School's first edition of the new look Comet Tales! Comet Tales will serve as a review of the current week and a look forward to future GHS happenings. Comet Tales will be available to you weekly via your favorite social media platform or email. Thank you to Mr. Matt Hirt and our Limelight students for their efforts. Only through their efforts has the rebirth of Comet Tales become a reality. If you find a correction which needs made please let our Limelight students know and we'll make it right in the next edition.
As you view this edition you'll find that we're off to an amazing start to the school year. So why all of the intentional fun? Research shows the national average for student engagement of high school age students is only 35%. A learning environment where approximately only one in three students is engaged in his or her education is unacceptable!
A critical component to increasing student engagement will be our willingness at GHS to serve as a Life Prep high school. WE understand there are countless paths to success and are committed to supporting our students in finding their individual paths to success.
At the heart of creating innovative learning opportunities for students who will be Future Ready are Old School Values and Expectations of Excellence. As you visit Genoa High School you'll hear "please" and "thank you" and you'll see us treating each other with respect. When we fall short of our standards there will be uncomfortable conversations, but we'll learn from our mistakes and we'll grow.
For those who know me you've often heard me say, "There is nothing better than being a Comet!" I could not be more proud or honored to serve as the Principal of Genoa High School.
As always,
Go Comets!
International Talk Like a Pirate Day September 19)
International Talk Like a Pirate Day (ITLAPD, September 19) is a parodic holiday created in 1995 by John Baur (Ol' Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap'n Slappy), of Albany, Oregon, U.S., who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate. An observer of this holiday would greet friends not with "Hello, everyone!" but with "Ahoy, maties!" or "Ahoy, me hearties!". The holiday, and its observance, springs from a romanticized view of the Golden Age of Piracy.
The GHS student challenge for 25,000 points ended in a tie. Junior Cole Waters from the yellow team and Freshman Braelyen Mielke, Noah Curtiss and Alexys Zellner secured points for the blue team.

CEO Internship Program
The Ottawa County Business Advisory Council (BAC) created a new program for all seniors, and some qualifying juniors, called the Career Exploration Opportunity (CEO) Program. The CEO Program allows a student to get an internship with an employer of their choice to learn necessary on the job skills. Students can even work with the employer during the school day. Students can choose a 60 hour or a 120 hour program which earns a ½ or a full high school credit. To make this even better a $250 or a $500 scholarship is awarded to the student after successful completion of the internship. To get started with the internship program, interested students should see Mr. Larsen to identify an employer to partner with. After a student and employer are matched, the BAC will work with the employer to ensure all program requirements are met. Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors interested in doing the CEO Internship Program when they become a senior should talk to Mr. Larsen and Mrs. Maluchnik to begin planning.
