Half Day - Friday, August 30th
Bobcat families,
As you know, Aug. 30 is a half-day for all OPS students. This is a half-day planning day in the afternoon for teachers. Buffett students will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m.
As a building, we will be focusing on Common Sense Media curriculum with all students for this shortened day. Students will learn about digital citizenship topics with lesson topics like:
- Digital Friendships
- Who Are You Online?
- Is It Cyberbullying?
- My Social Media Life
- Responding to Online Hate Speech
Bobcat students will eat lunch prior to dismissal. Friday’s lunch will be served around 11:00 a.m. and students will be asked to eat a sack lunch that day. We welcome students to bring their own sack lunches or use their lunch account to get a school sack lunch consisting of the following:
- ham turkey and cheese sandwich
- carrots and broccoli
- apple
- chocolate milk
Teachers will take a count of students that plan to get a school sack lunch through their lunch account. Please talk with your student and let them know how you prefer them to eat lunch this day. Bobcat Den teachers took a count of those that will be bringing their sack lunch and who is using their school account for a sack lunch today (Wed., Aug, 28), so our kitchen staff has time to make the right quantities.
Transportation will pick up students at the early dismissal time and return them to their assigned bus stops.
We are grateful for your help planning for this half day on Friday.
NATIONAL COLLEGE COLORS DAY - Friday, August 30
Across the United States on the Friday before Labor Day students, parents, family, fans and alumni display their team spirit for National College Colors Day. This day is celebrated annually by wearing your college team’s colors and college or university apparel.
Students, wear your favorite college colors or shirt on this day. It will be a fun way to see everyone's favorite colleges. Can't wait to see the college colors!
FALL MAP Testing
District-wide fall NWEA MAP testing will begin on Aug. 26. This may sound really early! MAP testing is a measure of a student's growth from the beginning of the year to the end.
Students will be testing according to this schedule:
- Aug. 26-29-All ELA Classes
- Sept. 3-6-All Science Classes
- Sept. 9-13-All Math Classes
The most helpful things you can do to help your child have a successful testing experience are:
- encourage them to do their best/take their time
- don't make appointments during testing times
- provide a healthy breakfast
- help your child get plenty of sleep (recommended amount of sleep for middle school students is 9-11 hours)
Technology Information
Please see the flyer below to understand the items your family would be financially responsible for should your student lose or damage them.
In addition, the plastic shields on the laptops are not covered by the warranty or insurance. To ensure your family does not incur a cost for a damaged or lost plastic shield, inform your student to NEVER attempt to take the shield off the laptop.
The shields require a special tool to remove them without breaking the clips that hold the shield on the laptop.
Drop Off & Pick Up Procedures
When dropping your student off in the mornings, you can have them exit from the passenger side on the street (Larimore Avenue) or turn into the parking lot. If you enter the parking, we will unload cars all the way out to the curb/turn, do not wait until you are at the front door to let your child out of the car.
Remember that 5th and 6th grade students enter and exit through the upper main entrance and 7th and 8th graders enter and exit through the lower bus loop doors.
Join Our Safety Patrol
Are you looking to get involved at Buffett? Safety Patrol is looking for students who are eager to be a part of a team. Safety Patrol meets in the morning from 7:00am - 7:25am. Students are on duty to patrol for a week at at time. A schedule is made my Ms. Aggen and sent out a month at a time. If you are interested in joining our team, pick up an application in the office. If you have any other questions, contact Ms. Amye Aggen.
Allergy Alert
Due to a severe airborne allergy in our building, Buffett needs to be a fish and shellfish free zone. Please refrain from sending any kind of fish or shellfish in cold lunches with your student.
Many students have food allergies so we ask that you talk to your children about the importance of not sharing food. It is also Buffett's policy that no food or treats are brought into classrooms. Thank you for your cooperation.
Food allergies affect about 6% to 8% of children in the United States. Allergic reactions can be life-threatening, and in rare cases deadly. While emergency treatment is available for allergic reactions, there is no cure yet. The only treatment for food allergies is strict avoidance of allergens. Sometimes a small amount of allergen can cause a reaction.
