Employability Skills Standards
The State Board of Education recently approved K-12 Employability Skills Standards. Indiana’s Employability Skills Standards allow students to be prepared for ever-changing workforce needs. During the 2019-2020 school year, districts will be expected to submit a brief explanation on how they plan on implementing the standards at each of the grade bands, including how they plan to measure effectiveness as stipulated by the State Board of Education. Information regarding the aforementioned submission will be provided by IDOE by July 1, 2019. The board-approved memo can be found here. Please contact Ben Carter for additional information.
Self-Care Tip of the Month
- Schedule a Time- It is easy to not find time. Be intentional and schedule it! Use a timer to ensure you are efficient with your time!
- Relax Your Body- close your eyes, engage in a mindless motion (rocking, watching water flow), listen to soothing sounds, etc.
- Quiet Your Mind- This is hard and takes practice! You will get better.
- Be Present- Don't be worrying about the past or future! Stay in the moment!
- Learn to Return- Think of and return to your place of peace! Maybe the beach? Your favorite lake?

Katie Scott
My name is Katie Scott, and I am excited to be interning for the Office of School Improvement this summer! I live in New Castle, and I recently graduated from the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics and Humanities. I will be continuing my education at IU Bloomington this fall studying International Law and Arabic through IU’s Language Flagship Program. I hope to work for the U.S. State Department in the future in an overseas embassy. Transition of CTE to Governor's Workforce Cabinet
HEA 1002 – Career and Technical Education, a priority bill for Governor Holcolmb authored by Representative Holli Sullivan, made substantial changes to Indiana’s Career and Technical Education programming. These changes include transitioning authority from the Indiana State Board of Education (SBOE) for the Carl D. Perkins program to the Governor’s Workforce Cabinet (GWC). Historically, SBOE engaged the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) with a memorandum of understanding to carry out the state Perkins plan and distribute funding accordingly. The Department employed staff to meet these obligations. As a result of this new law, IDOE CTE staff will be employed by the Governor’s Workforce Cabinet effective July 1, 2019. The Governor’s Workforce Cabinet staff will be providing additional communication and guidance in anticipation of this transition. Questions or concerns, prior to July 1, may be directed to Dr. Andrew Melin, Chief of Innovation at amelin@doe.in.gov.
INCE Tip of the Month
Did you know that the “Find Schools” tool in the Plan for Education resources in INCE allows you to search for ALL types of postsecondary opportunities in Indiana? And it even links to Training Provider websites? “Find Schools” also allows you to see which schools and training providers in Indiana may have opportunities for financial assistance tied to them! That’s right! It’s a way for interested students to find resources to pay for training beyond high school, just like our “Search for Scholarships and Grants” tool helps students to search for financial assistance for two-four-year college degree programs!

Verification of CTE Pathways
With the implementation of Graduation Pathways, IDOE will begin validating postsecondary competencies completed by students in the cohort. Beginning with the 2019 cohort, the first postsecondary competencies to be validated will be Industry Certifications and Career and Technical Education (CTE) Concentrators. Any graduate reported to IDOE on the DOE-GR with a postsecondary competency of industry certification or CTE concentrator that is unable to be verified through the Indiana Technical Education Reporting System (INTERS), will count as a non-graduate for purposes of calculating the school’s graduation rate. IDOE will begin notifying schools July 1 if a graduate record cannot be validated and will be removed from the count of graduates when calculating the 2019 graduation rate.
Industry Certifications must be recorded in the INTERS system in order to count for Graduation Pathways. This can be done at any time during the school year, as long as the certification is earned prior to the spring reporting deadline.
Career and Technical Education (CTE) Concentrators are verified through enrollment in INTERS. In order to meet the Postsecondary-Ready Competency of CTE Concentrator in Grad Pathways, the student CTE enrollment must be recorded, along with the amount of credits earned, in INTERS during the reporting period for each school year for each CTE course respectively.
