Mr. Jim Hamby, Principal of LES is retiring from Lexington Elementary School

On January 17th, Mr. Hamby will be leaving Lexington Elementary as principal and beginning his new life of relaxation. He came to LES as an assistant principal over twelve years ago. He fell in love with LES and wanted to lead the school in becoming one of Lexington’s greatest elementary schools. Mr. Hamby states, “It has been an honor to be a part of the LES family”. One of Mr. Hamby’s greatest contributions is the designation of becoming an International Baccalaureate School. We are thankful for his leadership and kindness. He has developed relationships that will be remembered and treasured. “You will be missed, Mr. Hamby.”

Reading Strategies To Try At Home

Give your child different strategies when they are stuck on a word...not just “sound it out”.

  • Use the picture-look at the picture and make a guess as to what the tricky word might be.

  • For shorter words, try stretching out all of the sounds in the word and then say the whole word. Ex: “dot” /d/-/o/-/t/, blend it back together “dot”

  • For longer words, remind your child to look for chunks or smaller word parts within the larger word. Ex: “standing” /st/-/and/-/ing/, blend it “standing”

  • For those words that cannot be figured out by using sounds, ask your child to skip it, reading to the end of the sentence and then stopping to think about what would make sense there. Check the guess by looking at the letters near the beginning, middle and end and ask, “Does that look right?”

Help your child to be a math whiz with these math tips for parents

Show your kids math at work in their world. Get your kids used to math by thinking out loud when making calculations. Then, let your children work out some real-life puzzles themselves. For example:

  • Let them measure when you bake.

  • Ask them to figure out how long of a hose you need to reach from the faucet on the side of the house to the garden.

  • Let your child figure out how many miles you’ll be driving on your next trip by using the information on a map.

  • Sort silverware by knives, forks, and spoons. Sort cards by suit or numbers.

Be positive about math. Express confidence in your child’s ability to do math. Don’t stress either your own fear of math or how difficult math is or how much you admire anyone who can do math. Remember, everyone can and does use math all the time.

Please make sure that your child is ready to leave the car when dropped off in the morning so that the car line can continue to move quickly and smoothly.

Quick safety and security item...

When dating any document, check etc, in 2020, it's recommended to put the full year instead of just 20.

For example, 01/10/20 should be dated 01/10/2020.

Someone can easily re-date your item 01/01/2018

Just a quick recommendation.
