Tiger Times
Week 20: January 20-24
2 Things
Ya'll...you do good work, but holy moly, it's hard work. It's exhausting work. It's emotional work. It's gratifying work. Sometimes it feels like we will suffocate under the weight that we carry. We pour ourselves into our kiddos everyday and do our best to give them our best. There are two things I want you to remember, as we navigate the second half of this school year:
1-Put on your oxygen mask first.
This is the first rule of rescue. First Responders are taught to take care of themselves first---their most important job is to make it back home to their families. When you board an airplane and they give you the safety speech, they tell you to put on your oxygen mask before attempting to help anyone else-including your children. If you go in to rescue a drowning victim, you have to insure you are equipped to come back out of the water. Why? Because you are no good to anyone if you are harmed. I would be willing to bet, a lot, that this isn't the instinct any employee of Randleman Elementary School harbors. You genuinely will do anything for the children you have been entrusted with. But hear me loud and clear-Put on your oxygen mask first. Self care is important. Don't take it lightly.
2-YOU, my friend, are enough.
Do you ever feel like it? Of course not. But right now, take a deep breath and tell yourself, "You are enough." Because you are. That may not mean that you are able to do all the things for all the people in all the ways, but please please please rest in the fact that you were put in the place you are in, given the Tigers that you were given, blessed with the family that you have, even provided with the challenges that you are facing right now, because you are enough. I see you. I see what you are doing everyday. You are enough.
I came across the list below and I wanted to share: It is from a group in Baltimore called the Happy Teachers Revolution and they have identified 12 Choices that they agree to make each and everyday as educators to take care of themselves. It's good advice-check it out.
