2016 Make A Difference Days

River Oak Christian Academy will be participating in a food drive to benefit The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri. The food drive will be October 17-21. We are asking the students to donate nonperishable items; please no glass bottles or jars. You may also contribute as a family with a monetary donation (checks payable to: The Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri). Please help us as we aim to help those families in need in Cole County.

Teddy Bear Day

We have been talking about different kinds of bears in Phonics and next Wednesday, October 19, is TEDDY BEAR DAY! Please allow your student to bring one of their favorite stuffed bears to school that day. We will write about our bears and introduce them to our friends. If your student does not have a bear, please send another stuffed animal.

BRRRRRRR!!

It can get chilly in our classroom during the day. Please send a school appropriate sweater or sweatshirt for your student to keep at school for the week. I will send them home on Fridays.

Our field trip with the 2nd graders is planned for Wednesday, October 26th. We are so excited for the Frog Program at the Runge Nature Center, a walk on the nature trail, and then some time to play at Memorial Park. We will leave River Oak at 12:45 and return by 3:00.

BIBLE

We had a great time learning about the Ten Commandments! They learned the song and movements and had a wonderful time practicing and performing at chapel.

Next week we will study Joshua and Caleb and their faithfulness in the wilderness and the deliverance of Jericho into the hands of the Israelites.

Our verse is Mark 12:30, "And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength."

MATH

We will complete our short chapter on tally marks and graphs on Wednesday. Our next chapter is Money. We will work on recognizing, counting and grouping pennies, nickles and dimes.

We will continue to review addition and subtraction each day.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Phonics

We are continuing to work on initial and final blends. They see the blends used in word families we have already studied and in their reading books.

Our theme for this unit is God's Creatures. We have learned about penguins and now we are learning about different types of bears. That is why we are having Teddy Bear Day.

Spelling

Our first dictation was successful. I was very pleased with all the effort. There will be another sentence next week.

Our new words are:

dust, just, must, ax, tax, wax, cab, crab, grab, to
