Children's Grief Awareness Day
November 16th, 2023
Children's Grief Awareness Day is designed to help us all become more aware of the needs of grieving children — and of the benefits they obtain through the support of others. Children's Grief Awareness Day is an opportunity to make sure that grieving children receive the support they need.

Facts and Statistics
- 1 in 12 children in the United States will experience the death of a parent or sibling by the age of 18 (*this does not account for the loss of a close relative or friend).
- 7 in 10 teachers currently have at least one student in their class(es) who had lost a parent, guardian, sibling, or close friend in the last year.
- Bereaved young children are more likely to be expelled from school, repeat a grade, less likely to be in gifted education programs and to have a disability.
- Bereaved children feel understood and validated when caregivers openly discuss the person and/or the death.
