What is PARODY?
Parody can often be confused with satire. Although parody can be used to develop satire, it differs from satire to a certain extent. Parody mimics a subject directly to produce a comical effect. Satire, on the other hand, makes fun of a subject without a direct imitation. Moreover, satire aims at correcting shortcomings in society by criticizing them.
Ex.) Take caricatures for example. Caricatures take the physical peculiarities of a person and highlight them to achieve humor. Just look at the caricature of famous physicist Albert Einstein.
So what does it look like?
“My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips’ red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damasked, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks...”
Here Shakespeare makes a parody to many of the love poems popular to his era. In "Sonnet 130", Shakespeare presents a kind of anti-love poem theme to his piece to mock the outrageous and exaggerated metaphors many poets made towards their lovers during that time. Unlike a love-poem goddess, his mistress does not have eyes like the sun, she does not have red lips nor does she have a white complexion. Her cheeks do not have a rosy color and her hair is not silky smooth. All the cliché qualities were made purposely absent in this speaker's mistress. Such a description allows Shakespeare to mock all the poets who looked for such impossible qualities in their beloved.
Now that you have seen an example, can you think of any parodies you may have seen in media or society?
