Classroom Learning Time
Our Focus Points
Reading / Language Arts
Students are continuing to work through our Daily 5 rotations, Read to Self, Read to Someone, Partner Fluency Time, Listening Time, and Teacher Time. Our comprehension focus this week is Comparing and Contrasting various aspects of story elements. Other areas of focus throughout our Daily 5 rotations are: context clues, predicting, journal writing, response to reading, fluency and word building on the Ipads. I am very excited to see their excitement and focus to their day to day reading grow. We are truly building life long readers.
Math (Topic 2/Unit 2)
This week we are concluding our Unit 2. Students worked one on one with me in small groups to review the test. Students then retook Unit 2 test on Tuesday. We will begin Unit 3 on Wednesday.
Writing
Students are continuing to gather stories in their writer's notebooks. This week we will be adding on to our sentence building. We will be reviewing and applying the use of different kinds of sentences and their punctuation into our daily writing. Also students will begin using a 4-square graphic organizer to help them develop paragraph structure. This organizer helps students to develop a paragraph that includes an introduction, body and conclusion. Students will practice this structure a lot and should have it mastered within the year. We will be adding paragraphs to a story or topic as the year goes on.
Science
We are continuing our first unit "Forces and Motion". Students are exploring with different types of forces and how they impact motion of things/objects. Students are learning about gravity and friction. This week they will be making discoveries with forces and magnetism. We have been enjoying many hands-on activities that have helped build on these big and fun concepts. Our unit 1 test will be next week.
Social Studies
We will begin our first topic of study: Map skills. Students will be studying the compass rose and its directions. They will also be using the compass rose and its directions to move from one place to another.

1. ATTENDANCE: A Key to Your Student’s Success – Research shows that children who are in school most of the time do better on state tests. Studies also show that kids who are absent more often score lower on state tests. Being late for school hurts a child’s learning, too. A student who is 10 minutes late every day will miss 30 hours of instruction during the year. Children can copy notes or make up an assignment, but they can never get back what’s most important: the discussions, the questions, the explanations by the teacher and the thinking that makes learning come alive. Your child’s success in school depends on having a solid educational background – one that can only be gained through regular school attendance. THE PARENT INSTITUTE
2. POPCORN will be sold every Friday during lunch for $.50 a bag. Due to state guidelines, we will only be offering plain popcorn this year. Proceeds to supplement the 4th Grade Mackinac Island Field Trip.
